17th Annual Kansas City Bikers for Babies® Ride – Kansas City, Kansas

October 31, 2011
A very special 5-year-old girl appears on her little “Harley” in the lead photo for this article. Maggie, the daughter of Ken and Bridget Swearingen, had a rough start in life. She had to be delivered by emergency C-section at 27 weeks weighing 2 pounds, 3 ounces. She was taken to the NICU where a nasogastric feeding tube and PICC line, a semi-permanent type of IV, were inserted and remained for her first month. At birth, Maggie also had defective heart valve that was corrected by medication. After two months in the NICU, Maggie was able to go home close…

10th Annual 9-11 Tribute Rally and Ride - Grandview, Missouri

October 31, 2011
For me, Tuesday, September 11, 2001, began as just another routine day at the office. Then I got a call from a good friend, a Kansas City area resident who grew up in New York City. He was watching the news on television and was the first to inform me that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by an airliner. Coworkers were also getting calls, and soon began to gather at cubes where portable radios were available to follow the news of the incredible, tragic developments. The decision was soon made to send everyone home. Before…

On Friday, October 7, there were so many bikes in town for the 7th Annual Vintage Festival at Barber’s. The park opened at 7 a.m. with registration for the AHRMA Road Racing and the Barber Vintage Museum opening soon after, and the Swap Meet opened at 8. The museum had a book signing with David…

Ride with the 40 – San Francisco, California to Shanksville, Pennsylvania

September 30, 2011
United Airlines Flight 93 routinely took off from Newark International Airport bound for San Francisco, but this day was anything but routine. On this day, September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked the plane with intentions believed to be crashing it into the White House or the U.S. Capitol Building. Their plans were foiled when the 40 passengers and crew on cell phones heard that other jet liners had crashed into the two World Trade Center towers in New York and into the Pentagon in Washington. Knowing they had nothing to lose--and much to prevent--they rose up against the hijackers, with the…

10th Annual Ride for Kids - Birmingham, Alabama

September 30, 2011
Well, it was another beautiful Sunday morning as the bikes rolled into Barber Motorsports Park on September 11 for the 10th Annual Ride for Kids, benefiting the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. I think someone is watching over this event because it always has nice weather, well at least for the last 7 years that we’ve been going anyway. Most of the kids were already getting their faces painted as the parents were getting registered for the ride and to ride the track. The bikes that were pre-assigned to ride with the kids that come each year were already in line,…

In The Wind - Bikers Rebuilding Alabama

September 30, 2011
History-making storms ripped through the Southeast, April 27 of this year, with the hardest hit, most damage done, and the most people killed in the state of Alabama. People are still trying to rebuild their lives this many months later. With that said, you would think that any and ALL help offered would be appreciated, but that’s not the case. A group of bikers known as the “Sons of Armageddon” motorcycle club, who are a charity-based group that believe in helping their fellow man in times of need, set out for some of the hardest hit areas after the storm…

36th Annual ABATE of Kansas Labor Day Rally - Perry Lake, Kansas

September 30, 2011
It was late Friday afternoon when I headed for Perry Lake’s Paradise Point for the annual ABATE of Kansas Labor Day Rally. I looked forward to seeing my long-time friend Zick from Washington, Iowa. He had ridden down earlier in the day with his buddy Russ. Based on my arrival time, I anticipated a long line at registration. Sure enough, the line was long, but I enjoyed passing the time with the Consolvers and some other folks from the St. Joe area. I gave Zick a cellphone call and found out our campsite was along the tree line straight behind…

On September 10, 2011, the 17th annual Mule Run was held in Kearney, Missouri. This was my first year attending, and I’m wondering why I haven’t been before! This is an awesome event full of live music, free food and beverages, give-aways, and great people! Twenty dollars to get in made this one of the cheapest parties in Missouri! The gates opened at noon, and I finally rolled in around 3 p.m. I was not one of the lucky ones who rode in on a bike, but that’s OK; you don’t have to ride in to have a great time!…
