2012 Polar Bear Ride - Blue Springs, Missouri

January 31, 2012
Every year, the Greater Kansas City Chapter of H.O.G. schedules a January 1 ride referred to as the Polar Bear Ride. The name is often appropriate, since frigid winter weather has normally established itself in the Midwest by the time New Year’s Day rolls around. There have been many years when the ride had to be postponed due to icy roads. Happily, that was not the case for the first day of 2012. The year 2011 had ended with an amazingly warm day with the temperature reaching the upper fifties. New Year’s Day was about 10 degrees cooler and a…

Another ceremony would also take place at the same time at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Glennville located 25 miles west of Fort Stewart. There are 81 Veterans Cemeteries in the United States and two in Saipan and Guam. There are four more under construction in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and West Virginia. 18th Annual Teddy Bear Run - Birmingham, Alabama

November 30, 2011
It was a beautiful cool Saturday morning as hundreds of bikers gathered at Rider’s Harley-Davidson in Trussville for the start of the 18th Annual Teddy Bear Run to Children’s Hospital. Both of the Harley shops had been preparing for this day for the past several months, selling stuffed animals and raising money for the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham. Registration was another opportunity for people to scoop up some last minute critters. Sales from the critters also went to the hospital. The parking lot was filled to the rim with chrome trim! This may have been a record year with as…

Having grown from humble beginnings as a gathering of a few of Ralph Wayne Blackmore’s motorcycling friends, the event draws thousands of motorcyclists who park their rides on streets that are temporarily limited to motorcycle traffic only. Three Texas Rallies in Three Weeks

November 30, 2011
Our first rally found my wife and me at Ken Smith’s BIKERS facility about five miles west of Springtown, Texas. Ken has a slick operation here with a large outside area with covered picnic tables, bandstand, and outside dance floor. Completing the arrangement is Chris Gossett and American Motorcycle Services in the onsite garage, Christina Evartt in the Leather Shop and Tandy Dunavin heading up Lazy D BBQ. This week’s rally was for a local man with prostate cancer who was not doing well physically or financially. Over a thousand dollars was raised to assist him, his wife, and two…

She had to be delivered by emergency C-section at 27 weeks weighing 2 pounds, 3 ounces. She was taken to the NICU where a nasogastric feeding tube and PICC line, a semi-permanent type of IV, were inserted and remained for her first month. At birth, Maggie also had defective heart valve that was corrected by medication. After two months in the NICU, Maggie was able to go home close…

10th Annual 9-11 Tribute Rally and Ride - Grandview, Missouri

October 31, 2011
For me, Tuesday, September 11, 2001, began as just another routine day at the office. Then I got a call from a good friend, a Kansas City area resident who grew up in New York City. He was watching the news on television and was the first to inform me that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by an airliner. Coworkers were also getting calls, and soon began to gather at cubes where portable radios were available to follow the news of the incredible, tragic developments. The decision was soon made to send everyone home. Before…
