Can-Am Spyders at Reno's Powersports KC - Kansas City, Missouri

June 1, 2012
On Saturday, May 5, 2012 Stripe and I rode over to Reno’s Powersports in Kansas City, Missouri as several local Can-Am Spyder riders descended on the dealership. I’d never seen so many Spyders in one place at the same time, and it was great to see such an awesome turnout. There were Spyders there in every color, and some were highly customized with stereo systems, auxiliary lights, and custom paint. It was also apparent that Can-Am Spyders appealed to every age group. While we were there, several younger riders pulled in, as well as a few older folks who seemed…

23rd Annual Bikers With a Mission Ride - Kansas City, Missouri

June 1, 2012
More than 300 motorcyclists arrived at City Union Mission in Kansas City, Missouri, on Sunday, May 6, to participate in the 23rd Annual Bikers With a Mission Run for the Homeless. On-site registration was open from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and was staffed by the Kingdom Riders, Cycle Disciples , and City Union Mission. Riders came in spite of a forecast that called for heavy rain. Sure enough, rain moved in during the morning hours in the form of strong thunderstorms. Those who chose to go ahead and ride the 80-mile route had to deal with some very treacherous conditions. Many who came to…

10th Annual B.A.C.A. Bike Show - Kansas City, Missouri

June 1, 2012
The weather was perfect, the parking lot was full of bikes, and Brooke and her Bombshells were busy washing motorcycles in their bikinis when Stripe and I pulled into the parking lot at Harley’s & Horses Grill, Stage & Saloon. The date was Saturday, May 5, 2012, and the event was the annual Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) Ride-In Bike Show, which is always a huge event.

2012 Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run II - Coast to Coast

April 30, 2012
This September 7, the second Motorcycle Cannonball Endurance Run is going to be rolling out of New York on a 15-day journey across the United States travelling back roads to wind its way through rural America all the way to San Francisco Bay on pre-1930 motorcycles of a variety of makes. This ride is not for the comfort-only inclined. It’s more like for the little-to-no-food-or-sleep inclined that don’t mind pulling a MacGyver on the side of the road and in hotel parking lots on a ride, wrench, repeat cycle, as 2010 entrant Bill Rodencal would coin the phrase during the…

6th Annual Gailapalooza and Spring Fashion Show at Gail's Harley-Davidson

April 30, 2012
Last year, Gailapalooza took place on a glorious day at the end of a dismal winter season. For 2012, the situation was reversed. Winter in the Midwest had been one of the mildest in recent memory, but the weather on April 7 was cool, damp, and generally unpleasant. In spite of the weather, lots of motorcycle enthusiasts turned out at Gail’s Harley-Davidson in Grandview, Missouri, to check out the bikes and merchandise inside the dealership as well as the numerous vendor booths that filled the parking lot out front. In addition to the vendors, several charities had booths where they…

2nd Annual MLB & SOB First Ride - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

April 30, 2012
The start of the riding season party in Eureka Springs, Arkansas that was founded a year ago by myself, Doc Lonnie (photographer here at Cycle Connections and leader of the MLB biker group), had its second edition on the weekend of April 13-15. We knew the event was growing and was going to be even bigger than the first one last year when the headquarters resort, The Rodeway Inn Swiss Holiday Resort, was completely booked with every room reserved by a member of our group as soon as the dates were posted last fall. We ended up with the 1876…

Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama - Birmingham, Alabama

April 30, 2012
On Friday, March 30, the Indy cars roared back into town for the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama presented by Legacy Credit Union at Barber Motorsports Park. The rain returned with them, making a mess of things, but halting nothing. If it were the bikes it would be a different story, but these cars just put on rain tires and go. There were people there from 42 different states and 6 countries, with an estimated 80,000 people for the weekend, most of them on Sunday. At 8 a.m. on Friday, the track opened for practice and qualifying, starting with…

Dixie Bike Fest - Elko, Georgia

March 31, 2012
Dixie Bike Fest is a small rally that takes place in Elko, Georgia at the Elko Mud Boggin off of Highway 26 which leads to Hawkinsville, Georgia. When I arrived at the gate, I found many of the familiar faces such Scott Frey and Judy Defoe who help make up a bunch of great guys and gals of the CMA. They are the members of the Chapter #330 Son Riders from Warner Robins, Georgia. Most of the members are retired or members of the Warner Robins Air Force Station about thirty miles up I-75. I am always glad to see…

Show Me Bike Show 2012 - Sedalia, Missouri

February 29, 2012
For over 10 years, the Sedalia Motorcycle Association has put on a motorcycle show in late January or early February. On February 1, 2011, a major winter blizzard dumped nearly two feet of snow on Sedalia, a community of about 21,000 residents about 80 miles east of Kansas City. That really put a damper on last year’s Show Me Bike Show. Fortunately, the weather for the 2012 show was very good, and the Ag Building at the Missouri State Fairgrounds was filled with show bikes, vendors, and motorcycle enthusiasts. The February 4, one-day show began with registration from 9:00 a.m.…

2012 All-American Motorcycle Show/World of Wheels-Kansas City, Missouri

February 29, 2012
Bartle Hall was the place to be in Kansas City during the weekend of February 10-12. Hot rod and custom car fans and motorcycle enthusiasts attended the 52nd Annual World of Wheels show sponsored by O’Reilly Auto Parts. Each year the All-American Motorcycle Show, an invitational event presented by Gail’s Harley-Davidson , is a special feature at World of Wheels. This year’s ticket prices were $17 for adults and $5 for children aged 6 to 12 with discounts available at O’Reilly Auto Parts stores. World of Wheels has several motorcycle classes that are judged separately from those in the All-American…

Benefit Ride for Amber & Clint - Blue Springs, Missouri

January 31, 2012
Around 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, approximately 60 riders, many riding two up, rolled into the parking lot at Side Pocket’s in Blue Springs, Missouri for a benefit ride to help cover medical expenses for Amber Loulos and Clint Young, who were critically injured in a car accident on December 27, 2012.When Stripe and I arrived, we were glad to see such a great turnout. I recognized several people, including many of Amber and Clint’s closest friends who I’d met at a party Amber and Clint threw this past summer. I also noticed a tent that was setup in…

7th Annual Christian Bikers Workshop - Kansas City, Missouri

January 31, 2012
The 7th Annual Christian Biker Workshop was presented by the Kansas City Chapter of Cycle Disciples M/C on Saturday, January 7, at the Education Building on the campus of Calvary Bible College and Theological Seminary. Around 40 motorcycling believers were in attendance to share fellowship, faith, and the love of motorcycles. After an opening prayer, Teddy Bitner, a.k.a. Colonel, began the program with a welcome and announcements. He introduced the first speaker, Terry “T.J.” Hummel, an Air Force veteran and a Patrot Guard Riders Senior Ride Captain, one of twelve in the state of Missouri. T.J. explained that the Patriot…

MLB and SOB 2012 Eureka Springs First Ride - Eureka Springs, Arkansas

January 31, 2012
About February while hanging out at one of the bike shows in KC, MLB and SOB motorcycle clubs along with the Swiss Holiday Resort – Rodeway Inn in Eureka Springs, Arkansas decided to organize a “start of the season” ride and gathering on a weekend in April. When the leaders of the motorcycle clubs and the manager of the resort first decided to put together an early spring gathering to celebrate the beginning of the riding season, little did they know how well it would be received. The word was spread in February and soon the original resort was completely…

2012 Polar Bear Ride - Blue Springs, Missouri

January 31, 2012
Every year, the Greater Kansas City Chapter of H.O.G. schedules a January 1 ride referred to as the Polar Bear Ride. The name is often appropriate, since frigid winter weather has normally established itself in the Midwest by the time New Year’s Day rolls around. There have been many years when the ride had to be postponed due to icy roads. Happily, that was not the case for the first day of 2012. The year 2011 had ended with an amazingly warm day with the temperature reaching the upper fifties. New Year’s Day was about 10 degrees cooler and a…

2011 Wreaths Across America - Milledgeville, Georgia

January 31, 2012
A few months earlier I received an e-mail from Harvey Holloway of the Bikers For Christ informing me that The Wreaths Across America ceremony would take place at the Georgia Veterans Cemetery off the Vinson Highway on Saturday, December 10. Another ceremony would also take place at the same time at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Glennville located 25 miles west of Fort Stewart. There are 81 Veterans Cemeteries in the United States and two in Saipan and Guam. There are four more under construction in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and West Virginia. Since 1980, the federal government has awarded…

Sturgis Events & Sponsors Contribute to Charities - Sturgis, South Dakota

December 31, 2011
The City of Sturgis Rally Department recently announced that the 9th Annual Sturgis Mayor’s Ride held Monday, August 8, during the 2011 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally contributed $11,000 to the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department, $3,000 to the Sturgis Police Department Reserves and $1,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The Mayor’s ride was originally established as a fundraiser to support the important functions of the fire department including not only fighting fires, but also responding to accidents and other emergency situations. This year Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen chose to add the Sturgis Police Reserves and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to…

2nd Annual Run to the Hill Dice Run for Autism – Kansas City, Missouri

December 31, 2011
Sunday October 23, 2011, was the second annual Run to the Hill-Dice Run for Autism. I was fortunate enough to have attended the first event, so my expectations were high for the day’s events. The day started off at Shea and Shelly McCall’s property known as The Hill, which was the start and finish points for the activities. Registration for the dice run was held from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. with kickstands up at 11. The registration fee was $25 per rider and $15 for the passenger; all proceeds were to be given to the Team Tommy-Autism Speaks fund. After…

Dell's Powersports New Year’s Eve Ride 2011 - Blue Springs, Missouri

December 31, 2011
Can you believe it was 65 degrees on December 31 here in the Midwest? Call it global warming or whatever you want, but 41 riders including Stripe and I took full advantage of the warm weather by participating in this year’s Dell’s Powersports New Year’s Eve Ride. Riders on Hondas, Harleys, and everything in between met at Dell’s Powersports in Blue Springs, Missouri around 11:30 a.m., and shortly before Noon, we headed West on 40 Highway, South on Woods Chapel Road, and East through Fleming Park/Lake Jacomo. After winding our way through the park and along the lake, we headed…

23rd Annual Toys for Tots Ride-Rawhide Harley-Davidson-Olathe, Kansas

November 30, 2011
Sunday, November 6, began as an overcast, chilly day. Riders were bundled up as they arrived at Rawhide Harley-Davidson . in Olathe, Kansas, with bundles of toys strapped to their motorcycles. Members of the Central Midwest H.O.G. Chapter directed the parking of bikes in the staging area and handled ride registration. Almost 800 toys were donated to Toys for Tots by roughly 600 riders. To participate in the ride, motorcyclists donated $10 each in addition to the toys. The 24th Marine Regimental Headquarters is the unit in charge of collecting toys in the Kansas City metro area, and three Marines…
