5th Annual Toys for Tots Ride - American Legion Riders - LeRoy Hill Chapter #19 - Gardner, Kansas

Written by  December 17, 2016

On Sunday, November 6, it was a chilly 40-mile ride from my home in Lee’s Summit to American Legion LeRoy Hill Post #19 in Gardner, Kansas where registration for the Toys for Tots Ride began at 10:00 a.m. The ride fee was $10 and a new unwrapped $10 toy. By the time the ride began at 11:00 a.m. the turnout had exceeded expectations with more than 50 people participating in the all-Kansas ride. Many were members of Chapter 19 or other area chapters.

The first leg of the ride, about 40 miles in length, took us to Cookie’s Long Shots Bar & Grill in Osawatomie where riders enjoyed a taco bar. Television sets at Cookie’s gave Kansas City Chiefs fans in the group an opportunity see how the team was doing against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The next stop was another 20 miles down the road at the Timber Creek Bar & Grill in Louisburg. By this time the Chiefs were protecting a narrow lead. The temperature had risen to a much more comfortable level, and many of the riders relaxed on the huge deck in the back.

The final leg of about 30 miles ended where we began at the American Legion post in Gardner. We got there in time to watch the last few minutes of a 19-14 Chiefs win. Following the 50/50 drawing everyone enjoyed socializing, and congratulations were in order for Jimmy and Kim Rogers, owners of Elite Cycles in LaCygne, who chose to celebrate their 17th Wedding Anniversary by participating in the ride.

The ride was all on smooth two-lane backroads with very little traffic. According to Chapter 19 Director Lynn “Atch” Atchison, those responsible for planning the ride included Sergeant at Arms Bryan “Ratt” Templeton and Daryl “Rockstar” Enloe. Good job, guys! Atch said, “I could not be more proud of Chapter 19 ALR and of all of the people that choose to follow and ride with us.” The ride raised $1,079.60 and several boxes of toys for the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. We at Cycle Connections applaud those who participated in this ride and all who support this worthy charity.
