26th Annual Bikers With a Mission Ride for the Homeless-Kansas City, Missouri

Written by  July 28, 2015

Every year, the Bikers with a Mission Ride raises funds for the City Union Mission. The contributions are used to assist Mission clients with needs over and above what the Mission typically budgets for, including utility assistance, bus tokens, baby formula, prescriptions, dental, medical care, eyeglasses and much more. Saturday, July 11, was the date for this year’s ride which began at Worth Harley-Davidson. Registration began at noon with participants contributing $35 per rider and $30 per passenger. Those who registered on line got a $5 discount. Nearly 200 riders registered. Kurzweils’ Country Meats served a delicious barbeque lunch while musical entertainment was provided by the KC Biker Band. Prior to the program, bidding was open for a long list of silent auction items including a motorcycle jacket; Chiefs vs Titans football tickets; Ready to Ride basket; Eric Hosmer batting helmet; Billy Butler helmet; G.P.S. for motorcycle; Gold baseball; portraits of current and former Kansas City Royals players Jeremy Guthrie, Aaron Crow, and Wade Davis; William Miller amber stag knife; Scala Rider G4 Bluetooth; picnic basket; and various T-Bones baseball tickets.

The program began at 2:00 with the Mission’s Executive Director Dan Doty welcoming participants and making announcements. Jody Jarrett sang the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America and everyone recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Dan presented appreciation plaques to representatives of Cumulus Media and Worth Harley-Davidson. Two City Union Mission clients told their stories of how the City Union Mission helped them and changed their lives. Heart of God Fellowship pastor Revered Bob Kaps gave a short sermon and sang Amazing Grace. After the announcement of the outcome of the silent auction and a door prize drawing, it was time to ride.

The route headed west and north from Missouri into Kansas covering about 90 miles of scenic backroads. Maps were provided to all riders, and signs along the way clearly identified all of the turns on the way to the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater near Bonner Springs, Kansas, where an area in the V.I.P. parking lot was reserved for B.W.A.M. Ride participants. A meal of hot dogs and chips was served and participants were entertained by music from Daniel Trublu Gray.

The ride fee included admission to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream Concert presented by 101 The Fox. At 7 p.m. immediately prior to the concert, a large facsimile check in the amount of $9,591 was accepted on stage by Dan on behalf of the Mission in front of the large audience attending the concert. Air personality Skid Roadie from 101 The Fox presented the check. Radio personality/biker Slacker was also on stage to kick off the concert

Featured bands for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream Concert were all tribute bands including Strictly Alice (Alice Coper tribute), Almost KISS (KISS), Edge of Forever (Lynyrd Skynyrd), and Fire & Ice (Pat Benatar). After a very warm afternoon, the evening weather was perfect for an outdoor concert event.

Thanks go out to all who participated and helped make the 26th Annual B.W.A.M. Ride a success. We’ll be looking forward to number 27 next year. Look for information on the City Union Mission website and Facebook page. Please keep in mind that donations to the Mission are always welcome.
