Biker Build-Off Winners at Shawnee Cycle Plaza - Shawnee, Kansas

Written by  January 1, 2015

For those who read the article I wrote last month entitled Biker Build-Off Team Building at Shawnee Cycle Plaza, you may recall that the management and employees at Shawnee Cycle Plaza drew names out of a hat, and divided into three groups for a fun team building exercise. Each team was given a stock motorcycle off the showroom floor, along with a budget of $2,500 (retail value) per team. The bikes were a red 2013 Honda Fury, a green and black 2014 Kawasaki Ninja ZX14, and a red and black 2015 Victory Cross Country. They had until Monday, December 22, 2014 to customize their motorcycle in an attempt to beat their competition. Along with a great sense of pride, the winning team members would each receive a paid day off. Plus, since all three bikes would be put up for sale, the team whose bike sells first will receive $50 each.

As I mentioned in my previous article, Shawnee Cycle Plaza owner Barry Bunner had asked to be one of three judges to select the winning bike, which was quite an honor. Therefore, on Monday, December 22, I stopped by the dealership to check out the bikes and cast my vote. When I walked through the front door, all three bikes were displayed just inside, next to a huge Christmas tree, which was quite appropriate. I was greeted by sales manager Paul McMinn, who handed me three ballots, and explained that I was to use these to judge each bike. I was asked to judge each bike, based on 5 pre-determined categories:1) Look, 2) Function, 3) Sale Ability, 4) Continuity, and 5) Overall Appearance. For each category, I was to use a 1-10 point system, with one being the lowest, and 10 being the highest.

I was blown away by the overall appearance of all three bikes, and couldn’t believe what these guys had accomplished in less than a month. All three bikes contained numerous custom accessories, as well as custom paint, which I hadn’t expected. One of the bikes was even given a complete custom paint job! The other two bikes also had custom painted wheels and other components, which was simply incredible. Paul also gave me a spec sheet for each bike (see below), which showed what each team had done to customize their motorcycles. This helped a lot, and helped make sure I didn’t miss any of the fine details.

Here are the three bikes and the three build-off teams, along with a before and after photo of each bike, and the customization specs. Additional photos of each bike are also displayed below this article:

Thank you to all who were involved in the Shawnee Cycle Build-Off!

As you could imagine, it was an incredibly tough job judging these bikes, because they were three totally different types of motorcycles, and all three were beautiful works of art. After judging each bike, just for fun, I added up all the points I’d given to each bike to see how it worked out. I was pleasantly surprised to see that one bike received a total of 47 points; another bike had 45 points, and the third earned 43 points. Talk about a close call!

Paul explained that the other two judges would rank the bikes that afternoon, and the winning bike and team would be announced that evening at a customer appreciation party they had planned. Unfortunately, due to a prior commitment, I was unable to attend the event, so Paul contacted me afterwards to let me know which bike and team had won.

Drumroll please….and the winner is Team Honda Fury!!!

Paul didn’t say which bike came in second and third, but since they were all winners in my book, I guess it really doesn’t matter.

Congratulations to Team Honda Fury, Team Kawasaki Ninja, and Team Victory Cross Country for a job well done. I don’t know about you, but I think Shawnee Cycle Plaza has a bright future in motorcycle customization!

As I mentioned before, all three of these bikes are now for sale, so you’d better hurry on over to the dealership and pick up your dream bike, because I can guarantee, they aren’t going to be there long! Below are more photos of all three bikes.

In closing, Paul told me they plan to do this again next year; however, all three teams will use the exact same make and model bike. Talk about a great challenge. I can’t wait to see what these guys come up with next!
