AFSP Ride to Silence the Stigma – Shawnee, Kansas

Written by  June 1, 2013

Every year almost 865,000 people worldwide attempt suicide. Of those, 83 percent involve poisoning, and 54 percent involve firearms. That’s one suicide attempt every 38 seconds. In the time it took to type this paragraph, two more people tried to take their own lives. In the United States, more people die by suicide than by murder with almost 35,000 suicides per year opposed to just short of 19,000 murders. That equates to one suicide every 15 minutes on average, give or take a few ticks of the clock. Suicide is the second leading cause of deaths among college students and adults between the ages of 25-34. Eighty-one percent of all suicide victims are male.

As bikers, we ride to do something about, or contribute to, meaningful causes. This is one to put on the calendar: The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), along with the KC Vulcan Riders and Shawnee Cycle Plaza, is presenting the First Annual “Ride to Silence the Stigma.”

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leading organization in the fight to understand and prevent suicide through education and research. “A person dies by suicide every 15 minutes. Every 16 minutes, someone is left to make sense of it” is a line from the ASFP flier, and it rings painfully true. The aftermath of suicide is painful, to put it mildly. It’s heavy and it’s deep, and it tears at one’s very soul, leaving family and friends to wonder why and to forever ponder what they could have or couldn’t have done differently.

So get off the couch, get out in the wind, and join us for the Ride to Silence the Stigma. The ride starts and ends at Shawnee Cycle Plaza, and we hope to see you there.
