One Block East Bar & Grill (formally Bike-Nites)

Written by  August 31, 2004

Some of you may recall a club in Kansas City called One Block West. Well, Mike Mills, the new owner of Bike-Nites Restaurant and Bar, wanted to recreate a similar place from his youth. Mike and Promotions/Event Manager, Jimmie Evans are putting all their heart, soul and energy into this major facelift, and from what I seen and from the description that’s been painted for me, it sure shows.

I also want to point out that the name hasn’t yet officially changed (we got the inside scoop, kids), so when you show up on your scoot, don’t be surprised if the signs still reflect the old name. But no worries, all is well and is getting better.

During the month of September, you will see many changes in progress as they transform the old Bike-Nites into One Block East. They are tearing out some walls, relocating and installing a new and larger dance floor, putting in their own professional concert lighting and sound system and moving the bar back a few feet to open it up some more. All of this remodeling is taking place on Mondays, but they are still open for business as usual from 6 p.m. 'til 1:30 a.m. Tuesdays they’re open from 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. and Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3:00 a.m.

Now you know I get out quite a bit and have talked with a lot of you about Bike-Nites. The word on the street is that a bad element exists. Those are just rumors kids, but because bad news travels fast and grows as it gets passed from one person to another, I want to set the record straight. Yes, there was an incident across the street, but that was a long time ago. The rest is all just a bunch of crap. I have been to Bike-Nites many times and have never seen anything like what the rumor mongers are saying. So lets cutout the bullshit and come on down and see for yourself. You’ll be glad you did.

Every weekend there will be live entertainment at the new One Block East, featuring premier local bands, and once a month they will showcase a national act. They’ve already lined up the Eagles tribute band, Tequila Sunrise, on September 24th, so what are you waiting for?

The food at OBE is freakin’ awesome. To start off with, they have mouthwatering smoked ribs, ham, turkey, chicken wings and brisket. Besides killer barbeque, this is what Kansas City is known for; meat slowly smoked to perfection, and OBE is no exception. In addition to their smoked meat, there’s a lot more great food to stuff your faces with. You’ll usually find Big Charlie sitting out front with the smoker keeping a close eye on all the happenings, but mainly watching that smoker like a hawk. It’s definitely a labor of love. Once you’ve tasted some of the meat that comes out of that smoker, I know you’ll agree.
Even though they’re remodeling, OBE will still feature four pool tables, three electronic dart boards, a large outside deck and lots of bike parking right out front. This is a great place for your bike club or for those of you who travel in packs to meet before your rides.

Yes, Sundays will still be bike day/night and you will find breakfast and drink specials before you ride and some of that great smoked meat at the end of the day. It’s also a great place just to party. With all the top of the line events and entertainment they have scheduled I know you’ll be riding in all the time. You might even want to think about throwing your next party there.

Make sure you check back with us next month for OBE’s new ad, event listing and special money saving coupons that you can print off your computer. Quick access makes it easy to get there and out again, as it is just One Block East of 71 Hwy on Blue Ridge Boulevard.
