Sturgis 2012 - Mike's Trip

September 1, 2012
A few weeks before heading to Sturgis each year, I start getting that exciting tingle in my stomach, which is an indication that it’s time to ride north. With the intense summer heat and drought we’ve had this year, I assumed this year’s trip was going to be one of our hottest yet; however, we was pleasantly surprised when the heat broke just a couple days before our trip.

Sturgis 2012 - Stripe's Trip

September 1, 2012
This is where I get to share some of the experiences of the 72nd Annual Sturgis Rally and Races that were outstanding to me. The following chronological summary, along with the accompanying photos, represents my “show and tell” on the 2012 event.

Life in the Sturgis Mega Campgrounds – Sturgis, South Dakota

September 1, 2012
After years of covering other rallies and events, Donna and I decided to travel with the rest of the Cycle Connections Magazine crew to cover the Black Hills Rally in Sturgis for the first time. Although the magazine had a house rented out in the countryside, we decided to get first-hand experience and coverage of the mega campgrounds that are like their own cities during the rally. So, Donna pulled our small camp trailer while I rode the bike for our first trip to Sturgis. We set up our camp in Glencoe Camp Resort, and the famous Buffalo Chip Campground…

Road Trippin' to Oklahoma Bike Week at Sparks America

August 1, 2012
I was pleased when my Cycle Connections colleague Doc Lonnie informed me that he and Donna planned to attend the 2012 Oklahoma Bike Week at Sparks America Campground. With my camping gear riding in their toy hauler/camping trailer, my Wide Glide would have a lighter load for our June 21 ride to the rally, and the magazine would have the benefit of two photojournalists providing double-coverage. Our plan was to rendezvous at Peculiar, Missouri, on Highway 71 to begin the trek. Due to my faulty memory of Missouri geography, I turned left at the intersection of 291 and 71 at…

10th Annual Ride for Ryan - St. Joseph, Missouri

July 1, 2012
Ryan Consolver would have turned 34 on June 9, 2012. Tragically, his life was cut short on August 11, 2002, as the result of a motorcycle accident in North Kansas City. His extended family found healing from their loss in the institution of an annual motorcycle ride called Ride for Ryan . To honor Ryan’s memory, the ride takes place on or close to his birthday each year. Proceeds from the ride go to provide scholarships for students pursuing their education in construction-related fields.

Cover Bike & Cover Model Search 2012 at The Bar - Lee's Summit, Missouri

July 1, 2012
The Bar in Lee’s Summit, Missouri was the location for our second cover bike & cover model search of the riding season, which took place on Saturday, July 23, 2012. Stripe, Lonnie, and Donna were out of town attending the Sparks America Rally in Oklahoma that weekend, and Danny had his bike torn apart putting a new wheel on the front, so Nichole recruited a few friends to help out for the day.

Bike Night at Worth Harley-Davidson

July 1, 2012
I remember a time, not so long ago, when the monthly H.O.G. Chapter meetings were about the extent of the social gatherings at the local dealerships. Although the dealerships have always done a great job sponsoring charity rides and events, if you wanted to have a beer, hang out with your riding buddies, and listen to some live music, you had to saddle up and head to the bar.

2012 Memorial Weekend B.A.C.A. Fundraiser – Bentonville, Arkansas

July 1, 2012
Seven years ago a group of biker friends from Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Kansas met for a weekend of riding around Springdale, Arkansas and decided to have a bikini bike wash and a little ride-in bike show with donations to go to B.A.C.A. The best any of them can remember, they raised around 100 bucks that afternoon.

7th Annual Walk to Remember - Weston Missouri

July 1, 2012
Two hundred eight lives to honor and remember from Kansas and Missouri. Two hundred eight heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the war on terrorism. We took time to remember with tears streaming. Time does not heal all. The pain for the families and friends is very real and it does not sleep.

Road Trippin' to the Hog Wild Rodeo 2012 - Conesville, Iowa

June 30, 2012
The Memorial Day holiday weekend is always a good time for me to head for Iowa. On May 24, Kansas City weather was warm with the wind absolutely howling out of the south. This is not a bad thing when northbound, and at my gas stop in Osceola, I found that my gas mileage was well in excess of 50 miles per gallon.
