Motor Boating for Margaret - Lee's Summit, Missouri

September 1, 2013
Some may wonder what Motor Boating has to do with a motorcycle poker run. Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. The Urban Dictionary defines motorboat (an intransitive verb) as “the act of pushing one's face in between two ample breasts, and rocking one's head side to side very rapidly while making a vigorous, lip-vibrating 'brrr' sound.” Friends of Margaret Liggett came up with Motor Boating for Margaret as a rather catchy and humorous name for a Sunday, July 28, ride to raise funds to assist her with astronomical medical expenses she has incurred in her…

8th Annual Cruising for the King’s Kids – Chelsea, Alabama

September 1, 2013
What a beautiful day for a ride! On Saturday, August 10, riders gathered at Rider’s Harley-Davidson in Trussville, Alabama to start rolling dice and registering for the 8th annual ride benefiting the King’s Ranch, which is home for so many kids out there who have been dealt a crappy hand in life. Many people feel sorry for the kids who live here, but I also feel so very sorry for what they have had to live through before coming here. These kids aren’t wired to be this way; they are conditioned to be this way, and through no fault of…

Road Trippin' to Oklahoma Bike Week 2013 - Sparks, Oklahoma

August 1, 2013
The 2013 version of Oklahoma Bike Week at Sparks America Campground ran from June 14 through 23. As usual, my schedule did not permit me to attend the entire event, but I was able to get away on Thursday, June 20, for a long weekend. This year, I was pleased to have editor Mike join me for his first visit to Sparks. With Mike on his Fat Boy and me on my Wide Glide, we headed south late in the morning. After a gas stop in Joplin, we decided to drop by the local Harley dealership. We discovered that the…

July 1, 2013
Joe’s Crab Shack in Olathe, Kansas is our newest bike night partner. Located at 11965 S Strang Line Rd, this is an ideal location for one of Kansas City’s only Tuesday night bike nights. There’s plenty of bike-only parking, and there’s plenty of room for you and all your riding buddies to hang out on their huge deck or walk around in the parking lot to check out all the bikes. A couple months ago, General Manager Alex Goncalves contacted me and said that he’d recently transferred to Olathe from the Independence location, and was interested in hosting a bike…

Visitors to Blue Springs Harley-Davidson during the dealership’s 15th Anniversary Celebration had the opportunity to take demonstration rides on brand new motorcycles. There was a large selection of Harleys from which to choose. The route covered more than 20 miles north and east of the dealership and offered riders the chance to experience the bikes at highway speed. The curvy roads allowed participants to evaluate the handling characteristics of the various models. Demos were conducted on both Friday and Saturday. Requirements for the ride were: age over 18, current motorcycle license, eye protection, long pants, closed toed shoes with heel…

15th Anniversary Weekend at Blue Springs Harley-Davidson

July 1, 2013
I’ve lived in Blue Springs, Missouri for about 30 years now, and was very excited when Blue Springs Harley-Davidson opened up only 10 minutes from my house. I’d recently purchased a 1999 Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, so it was nice to have a dealership so conveniently located for getting parts, service, accessories, and that annual or bi-annual vehicle inspection we’re all blessed (or cursed) with here in the state of Missouri. So when I heard about Blue Springs Harley-Davidson putting on a huge 15th Anniversary party, I knew Cycle Connections had to be a part of it. The three-day event officially…

11th Annual Ride for Ryan - St. Joseph, Missouri

July 1, 2013
Ride for Ryan is an annual motorcycle rally and ride honoring the memory of Ryan Consolver who lost his life at the age of 24 as the result of a motorcycle accident on August 11, 2002, in North Kansas City. The event raises money for a scholarship fund dedicated to students who, as Ryan did, have chosen to pursue careers in the construction industry. This year, scholarships of $1,000 each were granted to 17 students. The 11-year total exceeds $100,000 presented to approximately 110 students. The ride is always held on a Saturday around the anniversary of Ryan’s birth. This…

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) approached the Kansas City Vulcan Riders Chapter 1-44 to help with the event. The KC Vulcan Riders agreed, and the word was out. Kick stands went up at 10:45 a.m. for the 95-mile ride. The first stop was at High Noon Saloon in Leavenworth, Kansas, and the second stop was at Helen’s Hilltop in Tonganoxie, Kansas. Caroline Allen from the…

The Bombshells Kicking it at The Kickstand - Independence, Missouri

July 1, 2013
On Saturday June 1, 2013, Brookelyn and her Bombshells held a Bikini Bike Wash at the Kickstand in Independence, Missouri. Brookelyn, Caitlin, LeeAnn, Christina, and Pebbles washed bikes in support of the military, and although the rain slowed down the bike washes at bit, it didn’t discourage the bikers from contributing to the Bombshells worthy cause! The Bombshells are a non-profit organization and all the girls donate their time for worthy causes all over the Kansas City area. If you’d like to have the Bombshells at your next event, contact them now! The Bombshells’ next big event is the 4th…

15th Annual Spring Thunder Beach Rally - Panama City Beach, Florida

June 1, 2013
It’s May, time for spring, (for some this year, it was more of a Spring-Snow event), time for the Kentucky Derby, and time for the spring Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Beach, Florida. Mother Nature decided to throw a kink into this rally as well. We spoke with friends Mike and Cindy Marsh on Thursday, May 2, the day after the rally officially kicked off and their third day down there, thinking they had the beach kinda to themselves up to that point, which they did, but they said the weather had been crap the whole time. Other friends…

Doris included “Operation Gratitude” as part of the Demo Days. 24th Annual Bikers with a Mission Ride-Kansas City, Missouri

June 1, 2013
Riders in last year’s Bikers with a Mission Ride endured torrential downpours. This year’s weather was somewhat better, but the day still began with overcast skies, light rain, drizzle, and cool temperatures. Despite the unfavorable conditions, around 215 motorcyclists chose to participate in the May 5 ride to benefit the City Union Mission . Cash and pledges amounted to more than $17,000 bringing the 24-year total to nearly $623,000. The funds are used to help Mission clients with needs over and above what the Mission typically budgets for, including utility assistance, bus tokens, baby formula, prescriptions, dental and medical care,…

Ride for Heads in Helmets-Kansas City, Missouri

June 1, 2013
On Saturday morning, May 4, I was glad the ride from my house to Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Kansas City Chiefs, was only a short 16 miles. Light rain was falling, and the temperature was a chilly 37 degrees. I arrived a bit early at Lot M between Arrowhead and Kauffman Stadiums for the 9:00 a.m. registration, and only a few motorcycles were already there. I wondered how many bikers would show up on such a nasty day for the Ride for Heads in Helmets. Sponsored by the Kansas City Chiefs Ambassadors , O’Reilly Auto Parts , and Blue…

AFSP Ride to Silence the Stigma – Shawnee, Kansas

June 1, 2013
Every year almost 865,000 people worldwide attempt suicide. Of those, 83 percent involve poisoning, and 54 percent involve firearms. That’s one suicide attempt every 38 seconds. In the time it took to type this paragraph, two more people tried to take their own lives. In the United States, more people die by suicide than by murder with almost 35,000 suicides per year opposed to just short of 19,000 murders. That equates to one suicide every 15 minutes on average, give or take a few ticks of the clock. Suicide is the second leading cause of deaths among college students and…
