Road Trippin' to the 5th Annual V-Twin Expo

February 28, 2005
This year, the 5th Annual V-Twin Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio was held on the last weekend in January. It was much too chancy to ride a bike to up here in the North, but it was certainly worth a ride in a cage to participate. My partner, Wild Bill and I had the great fortune of being invited by Berry Wardlaw, owner and founder of Accurate Engineering, to assist his staff at their booth in the show. Berry’s Signature Series engines are considered by many to be top of the line for custom bike builders. They are not just pretty…

The 34th Annual Birmingham O’Reilly World of Wheels Custom Auto Show kicked off on Friday, February 11, at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Civic Center in Birmingham, Alabama, for a weekend of hot rods, race cars, custom imports, antique and classic cars, trucks, motorcycles and much more. This is the largest indoor custom car show in Birmingham, and is produced by Motorsports Productions, Inc. Jay Leno and Harley-Davidson Raise $800,100 for Tsunami Relief Effort

February 28, 2005
Back in 2001, Jay Leno and Harley-Davidson partnered up to raise $360,000 for victims of 9/11 by auctioning off a motorcycle that was signed by many of Jay’s guests on the Tonight Show, including John Travolta, Sylvester Stalone, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, and many more. Because of the success from that endeavor, when the deadly tsunami hit South Asia, Jay Leno and Harley-Davidson teamed up once again to auction off another bike, and raised $800,100 for the tsunami victims. For several weeks, the motorcycle was on the set of The Tonight Show, and was signed by more than 60 celebrity…

FUEL – American Made Bar & Grill

February 28, 2005
Walk into FUEL, and you’re surrounded by bike and car swag from the likes of Jesse James, OCC and Harley-Davidson, not to mention tool boxes, a few antique car parts, gas pumps and NASCAR & IRL hoods hanging from the ceiling. Bottom line; this is a sports bar with a twist. The theme here is All American Iron & Steel. Suddenly, I feel like grunting like Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. Although the doors just opened December 2, 2004, owner, Shawn McClenny, says it took ten plus years to get from the idea stage to reality. Some of you may…

Historic Weston, Missouri

February 28, 2005
I’ve ridden to Weston, Missouri several times, and always enjoy the short, but scenic 30 minute ride up M-45 from Kansas City. Weston is a small, charming community nestled among the high bluffs of the Missouri River about half way between Kansas City and St. Joseph, Missouri. It’s also one of the oldest and most picturesque river towns in Missouri. Weston has been around since 1837, which you can tell by all the antebellum homes scattered throughout town and along the bluffs that once overlooked the Missouri River. Yes, I said once overlooked, because after the flood of 1884, the…

Veteran Motorcycle License Plates

February 28, 2005
I know what you’re thinking. Veteran motorcycle license plates is kind of a lame subject, but is it really? I bought my first veteran plates for the King after my recent move from Kansas to North Carolina. Of course, I always do my research before I spend my hard earned dollars on extras for the King. So, I thought you might benefit from my findings and maybe consider purchasing your own veteran plates for your own ride! Every state has their own policies and regulations, which cover all types of motor transportation license plates. Some states still do not offer…

A Safe and Happy New Year’s Celebration at Knuckleheads Saloon

January 31, 2005
New Year’s Eve, as far as holidays go, is actually my least favorite. Every year at this time I wrestle with the same questions: Do I stay home safe in my warm little house or go out and risk being the victim of some amateur-night drinker. Do I go to friends’ parties and risk letting them see how truly unclassy I am, or go to some overpriced, overcrowded, trendy club where a trip to the facilities must be planned well in advance. Well, this year was a pleasant change. When we got word of the F.O.G. Cycles/Knuckleheads Saloon New Year’s…

Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO)

January 31, 2005
Most people don’t realize the amount of giving the biker community does via fund raising, poker runs, charity rides, raffles and just plain old donations. And I would almost bet that the biker community as a whole does more than any other for those who are disadvantaged, sick and in need than any other group in the world. What we can do for Special Olympics is no different. Most of the charities we are involved with usually just want money. And that’s OK. That’s all you can do for them in some cases. But Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO) is an…

The Midway - Farewell to a Great Biker Bar

January 31, 2005
Last August, I wrote a bike night review about a little bar in Lake Lotawana that is owned by a biker couple, Jerry and Chris Bowlin. I discovered the Midway Bar & Grill like most of our readers, through the Cycle Connections Bike Nights listings when I first moved to Kansas City in December 2003. But being December, I waited for the riding season to begin or the first thaw if you will, and after my first visit I knew I had found my new home. I fell in love with this little biker bar with its eclectic mix of…

Christian Bikers Workshop

January 31, 2005
On Saturday morning, January 8, the Cycle Disciples of Kansas City sponsored a Christian Bikers Workshop. Chapter president Teddy Bittner, a.k.a. the Colonel, had invited Cycle Connections to cover the event, and I was pleased to accept the assignment. Included in the group of about 30 participants were members of the Christian Motorcyclist Association, the Heart of God Fellowship, Bikers for Christ, the Tiffany Fellowship, Deerbrook Covenant Church, and, of course, the Cycle Disciples. The workshop took place in a classroom on the campus of the Calvary Bible College & Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. The first topic, “How…

January 31, 2005
If you’ve ever ridden through the Ozark National Forest, I’m sure you’ll agree that this is one of the most beautiful areas in which you could ever experience.Hot Springs, Arkansas is known for its legendary thermal springs that seep from the mountainside, making it such a hot spot. The Route 7 Scenic Byway that leads to this oasis it is a slice of motorcycle heaven. .Hot Springs and its surrounding national park have been welcoming weary travelers for centuries before motorcycles were even invented. U.S. Angels...Being a Little Bad to do a lot of Good

January 31, 2005
It’s my great pleasure to share this interview with my fellow riders, veterans and civilians alike. Dawn Glencer is a patriotic, take-charge kind of gal, who manages the U.S. Angles. Dawn and her crew of beautiful ladies support our wound comrades through personal visits and fund-raising events. So pop a cold one, sit back and enjoy her lively and sincere candor, as she shares with us the story of the U.S. Angels 2005. CC: How would you describe the U.S. Angels organization? Dawn: We’re a tight-knit group of professional females, who are all from the Southern Maryland area and have…

Gail’s Harley-Davidson 2nd Annual Premier Invitational Motorcycle Show

December 31, 2004
The dates were December 4 and 5, the place was the Overland Park Convention Center, and the event was the 2nd Annual Premier Invitational Motorcycle Show presented by Gail’s Harley-Davidson. Since the entries were selected based on photos of the bikes e-mailed to Gail’s, I expected to see only the cream of the crop on display. With over 120 entries the diverse array of customs, choppers and antiques exceeded my expectations, and this turned out to be a show that I will not soon forget. There were other attractions in addition to the motorcycles. Vendors and exhibitors included Carriage Works,…

Motorcycle Ride Volunteer Network - Pass the Word…Share the Wind

December 31, 2004
“In the wind.” For those of us who ride, there is no place we would rather be. Just for a moment, try to imagine what life would be like if the privilege of putting down the road and all the freedom that it represents was taken away from you forever by a disabling accident, or if the ability to experience the pleasure and thrill of riding was denied you because of a disability—an unsettling feeling, isn’t it? Gary and CJ Foote, founders of the organization Motorcycle Ride Volunteer Network (MRVN), have undertaken a worldwide effort to provide the opportunity and…

‘Twas the Night Before Christmas - F.O.G. Cycles Style

December 31, 2004
And what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature sleigh and…five Harley-Davidson scooters? Okay, maybe it wasn’t exactly the scene from 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, but it was just as appropriate for the holiday. Of course I am talking about the F.O.G. Cycles & Cycle Connections Online Motorcycle Magazine 1st Annual Christmas Drive, which was held at F.O.G Cycles on Saturday, December 18. Frank Hicks, owner of F.O.G. Cycles, along with Carl Busse and Wayne Thompson from Cycle Connections, came up with a plan that allowed those of us who could spare a few bucks this Christmas…

One More Ride Before Winter - Destination Unknown (Part 2)

December 31, 2004
My wife was in Waverly, Mississippi for a little R&R with her cousin. I was in Hutchinson, Kansas for a little R&R of my own. It’s where I ended up on a Saturday afternoon after an end-of-the-season, spur-of-the-moment motorcycle ride at the end of October. It was one of those weekends where you take off knowing there was no time frame. You didn’t have to be home by a certain time for supper. There was no breaking into a cold sweat knowing that my wife, Terri, was at home waiting for me to return at a specified time. Life was…

Charity is the Act of Selfless Giving

December 31, 2004
The Christmas and New Year holiday season always brings out the best in most riders, but this especially holds true for veteran riders across the nation. Why is this so? If you are a veteran, you most likely spent some past holidays away from family and friends as you served our country. As we know, this can be a very lonely time of the year, especially if we were overseas, and worse, in combat. So, we veterans tend to band together with other riders to raise money and gather gifts for those less fortunate, who need just a little help.…
