Safe Riding

Christmas Gift List for the Safe Rider

Written by  November 30, 2003

This is a great time of year for all riders! Now, wait a minute, give me a chance to explain! I know that most riders are catching a bit of chill in the air, and not getting as much saddle time as we all would like. However, this is the time to take stock in what new motorcycle safety products are available and get them on our Christmas list. This will serve two purposes: one, you actually provide a list to your significant other and/or children, thus making them happy; and secondly, you get exactly what you want - no funky ties, slippers or socks. Now everyone gets what they want, a happy Christmas day and no returns the next day!

But why safety items rather than chrome parts, a new seat or performance parts? Because Christmas is a feel good season and by your loved ones giving you safety riding gifts, they feel they are helping to protect you! Now that you’re in agreement with me, lets go browsing for your new gifts!

Hi-Tech Digital Tire Gauge - I know, you already have one that you bought at the gas station for $3.99, right? Well, think again, as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Those inexpensive ones are accurate enough for automobile tires, but not for motorcycle tires. As we all know, replacing a motorcycle tire is a very expensive ordeal and when under inflated by just 3-5 pounds, the tire wears out prematurely. Also, the bike’s handling changes with the reduced air pressure, and the tires can over heat at highway speeds, causing a blowout. Convinced? Try this tire gauge made just for motorcycles: TG100 by Roadgear for approximately $24. To order, call 800-854-4327 or www.roadgear.com.
Air Horn Systems - If you are concerned that your standard horn won’t do the job, you’re probably right! All manufacturer standard horns are within minimal legal limits, however, riders know that when we are not seen, we need to be heard! Rivco has a great lineup of air horns for most makes, and they are attention grabbers in both sound and design. To order, call 888-801-8222 or www.rivcoproducts.com.
Signal Sorcerer - How many times have you pulled up to a red light and waited, and waited, and waited for it to turn green? Whether we like it or not, many electrical street switches are not sensitive enough to recognize that our rides are there, so the light never changes. So, we just estimate what time we think it should be and take off, even though the light is still red. Well, this common scenario will eventually lead us to an accident or a ticket from a non-understanding police officer. The cost is only $20 and takes just a few minutes to install, with no wiring. To order, call 800-310-3026 or www.ironhorsemantechnologies.com.
Draggin Jeans and Shirt - For those that find leather to hot to wear at times, try Draggin Jeans, as they look, fit and feel like traditional denim jeans, but with 100% Kevlar in the seat and knees. The long sleeve Draggin Shirt offers the same protection with 100% Kevlar construction, open knit to allow maximum airflow and also offers optional armor pads. The jeans cost $80 and the shirt runs between $100 for natural and $120 for black. To order, call 800-459-2239 or www.dragginjeans.com.
Leather Legs - Still don’t want to wear full leather chaps or reinforced jeans? Try Leather Legs for knee to ankle protection from flying rocks or that unexpected tumble. They simply wrap around your leg, zip up the backside, one snap and you’re on the road. They come in various styles and sizes, so be sure to provide the simple measurements. Prices range from $75 to $100 and can include custom patch sewing. To order, call 800-889-4333 or www.leatherlegs.net.
Waterproof Glove Spray - We all have gloves that fit just right and when it is dry outside, they are perfect. However, when the rain comes, we are scrambling to find our waterproof gloves, or just resign to getting our only pair wet, which transfers to our hands being wet and cold. There is a great product that is compatible with all fabrics and provides a great barrier from the rain. It also retains your normal grip and flexibility. The price is only $4 for a 4.2 fl. oz. bottle of Nikwax Glove Proof. To order, call 800-335-0260 or www.soundrider.com.
VeeWipe Squeegee - It looks like rain, so you put on your raingear, snap on your face shield and you think you’re ready to take on the weather that is looming before you. But are you? With any rain, comes filmy, dirty road spray. You could use your glove or sleeve, but they just end up smearing and pushing around the grim. A great new AeroStich product has hit the market to eliminate this safety problem. It simply wipes away the rain and grim by using a simple thumb or index finger held face shield squeegee. It is worn on your left hand and can be trimmed to your liking. The price is $11 for a package of three sizes: small, medium and large; all included. To order, call 800-222-1994 or www.aerostich.com.
Proficient Motorcycling - David L. Hough has written two great books about street riding survival for all levels of riders. Both books: Proficient Motorcycling and Street Stategies; and More Proficient Motorcycling provide detailed topics to improve your skills through rider techniques, bike dynamics, weather handling and maintenance. They are $25 each and complement each other well. To order, call 888-738-2665 or www.bowtiepress.com.

I’m sure there are a ton of other great safety products out there, I just selected a few to get the juices flowing. So, check out the products, print out the list, mark the ones you want and hand over the list with a smile on your face!
