Our March 2014 cover bike is owned by Mark Kozak of Kansas City, Missouri. Mark is an avid collector of vintage motorcycles, and we shot his brother Wayne’s 1927 Harley-Davidson JD a while back for our November 2012 cover. Their love for classic motorcycles obviously runs in the family.

As you probably know, Knucklehead engines were produced from 1936-1947, so this was the last year before Harley-Davidson switched over to the Panhead design in 1948. The last Knuckleheads were available as either a 74-cubic inch Model FL or a 61-cubic inch Model EL, such as this beauty. As you also may or may not know, production of the overhead-valve Big Twins was interrupted by WWII, but by 1947 Harley-Davidson cranked up their production line once again and built another 4,117 Model ELs. Therefore, we thought this beautiful Knucklehead was the perfect bike for this month’s cover.

CC: Mark, what is your occupation?
Mark: I do steel buildings and erections.

CC: Do you have hobbies other than motorcycling?
Mark: Yes. I enjoy going to the Lake of the Ozarks to boat and swim. I also enjoy traveling.

CC: Why do you ride?
Mark: There’s always somewhere to go and something to see.

CC: How long have you been riding?
Mark: I’ve been riding since I was 10 years old.

CC: What was your first bike?
Mark: My first bike was a Rupp Scrambler.

CC: How many bikes have you owned?
Mark: I really couldn’t tell you.

CC: How many bikes do you currently own?
Mark: Way too many.

CC: What do you like most about your 1947 Harley-Davidson EL?
Mark: It’s one of the only vintage motorcycles I own that doesn’t need constant maintenance.

CC: What is your dream bike?
Mark: Any bike that I haven’t owned.

CC: What is your most memorable riding experience?
Mark: Riding with my father Wayne and my brother Matt on trips. My dad is 82 years old, and anytime he wants to ride, I’m in!

CC: What is your least memorable riding experience?
Mark: Following my brother. He always heads for a hail cloud!

CC: To what motorcycle clubs or organizations do you belong?
Mark: I belong to the Rolex Riders. We meet every Wednesday night.

CC: Which motorcycle rallies & events have you attended, and which is your favorite?
Mark: Sturgis, Bikes, Blues & BBQ, the Spring River Rally. Sturgis is my favorite because I get to spend 10 days with my dad and brother.

CC: What is your favorite bike night location?
Mark: I like going to Gail’s Harley-Davidson on Wednesdays. It’s close to my house, so I can ride one of my vintage bikes.

CC: Do you prefer riding in a group or by yourself?
Mark: I like riding in a small group with friends and family. You kinda take the party with you!

CC: Who are some of your closest riding buddies?
Mark: My dad, my brother Wayne, Brian, Chris, and of course Aaron, because I never know what he’ll be riding.

CC: Is there anything else you would like to share with o ur readers?
Mark: I’d just like to thank Cycle Connections for the cover feature and for all the hard work. I really enjoy reading your magazine!

CC: Thanks for the interview Mark, and thank you for letting us shoot your bike for this month’s cover.
