July 2005 Newsletter

I hope everyone had a good Fourth of July and you still have all your fingers and toes. Can you believe Tuesday, June 21 was the first official day of summer? For those of us here in the Midwest and farther north, our prime riding season is almost half over! Or, if you're one of those "my cup is half full" types, I guess you would say half of the riding season is yet to come!

Yes, I know those of you lucky enough to have year-round riding probably chuckle at the term "riding season," but for those of us who have four seasons in our year, we cherish each and every day we can get out and ride.

I've traveled all over the country, but have always lived right here in the middle of the good old USA. I'm sure one of these days when the old bones start creaking too much I'll probably pack up the bike and head south, but for now, I figure that I'm always at least halfway to every rally in the US and can ride to wherever I wish to go within only a few short days.

Have you ever wondered if it's possible to lose some of your passion for riding if you moved to an area where you can get out and ride any day of the year? I mean, is it like the people you know who love the ocean or mountains so much that when they finally move there, after a while they no longer notice the very beauty that brought them there in the first place?

Or maybe it's similar to how my cats reacted the day I installed a bird feeder outside the bedroom window. You should have seen their eyes the first time a bird landed and started pecking at the seed. They went nuts, and you couldn't have pulled their little noses and paws away from the glass if you tried! Now, only a few weeks later, they still enjoy watching the birds, but you can tell that most of the original excitement is gone. Sometimes they even lie on the bed and don't even bother to look out the window while a whole flock of birds is having a battle of who gets to eat first.

I don't know about you, but it makes sense to me that the shorter the riding season, the greater the passion. If that's the case, maybe I'll just stay put!
