Sturgis 2006 - Johnny Dare Live at The Full Throttle Saloon

July 30, 2006
Check out this year's collection of Sturgis 2006 photos of Johnny Dare, fellow biker and radio personality with 98.9 The Rock in Kansas City. These photos were taken during the Johnny Dare Morning Show remote on Thursday, August 10 at the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, South Dakota. Each year Johnny interviews celebrities as well as his fans who ride up from KC every year for the Sturgis rally. One of the celebrities Johnny interviewed this year was Stormy Daniels, who was in Sturgis this year promoting her hot new DVD entitled Sturgis Xposed with Stormy Daniels. Stormy has appeared…

4th Annual Ride for Ryan

June 30, 2006
Each year since the tragic death of Ryan Consolver at the age of 24 resulting from a motorcycle accident, his family has honored his memory and celebrated his birthday by putting on a charity poker run with the assistance of many sponsors and volunteers. Proceeds from the Ride for Ryan are used every year to provide scholarships for young people who are pursing careers in the construction industry, Ryan’s chosen field. This was my second year to attend the ride, having met Ryan’s parents, Rick and Janis, at the 2005 World of Wheels Show in Kansas City where they had Ryan’s…

3rd Annual Mayor’s Wheelin’ & Dealin’ Ride for Hope House

June 30, 2006
On Saturday, June 17, I joined many others in the community to support the 3rd Annyal Mayor’s Wheelin’ & Dealin’ ride for Hope House. Hope House is a local domestic violence shelter with two locations located in Independence and Lee’s Summit. Founded in 1983, the shelter’s mission is to break the cycle of domestic violence by offering many services to women and children of abuse. Hope House is one of the largest domestic violence shelters in Missouri offering many different programs. With a 52-bed shelter and early childhood center, the programs have expanded to include: outreach therapy, court advocacy, and…

2nd Annual Widows Sons Poker Run – St. Joseph, Missouri

June 30, 2006
Early Saturday afternoon, June 17, Stripe, fellow Cycle Connections photojournalist and Randy, one of my good riding buddies met at my house and headed north to St. Joseph, Missouri, which happens to be in my old stomping grounds. Evil Twin Cycles located at 704 South Belt Highway was the starting point for the 2nd Annual Widows Sons Poker Run hosted by the local Widows Sons Missouri Grand Chapter. The Widows Sons Masonic Motorcycle Association is an internationally based association of Master Masons who have joined together to share the sport of motorcycling and to introduce Freemasonry to the public and…

Hog Wild Rodeo - Conesville, Iowa

June 30, 2006
Twice a year the roar of motorcycle engines fills the air in the normally quiet rural area near Conesville in Southeastern Iowa. The annual Hog Wild Rodeo takes place the weekend before Memorial Weekend, and the Thunder in the Sand Rally is a Labor Day Weekend event. Property owned by the Circle of Pride Motorcycle Club provides plenty of space for RV’s and tent campers as thousands of bikers take up temporary residence for each rally.Having attended the Labor Day event for the past several years, I decided to check out the Spring rally this year. On Thursday, May 18,…

Flat Track Races at Lakeside Speedway, Kansas City, Kansas

June 30, 2006
Motorcycle racing returned to Kansas City’s Lakeside Speedway on June 10, the first of two scheduled dates this year. On Friday nights, racecars compete on this fast 3/8-mile dirt oval in Modified, Grand National, and Factory Stock classes. On this particular Saturday, it appeared that there might be no racing at all. The forecast was for an eighty percent chance of severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging winds, and possible flooding. Considering the fact that my ’89 Bonneville already has hail damage, the decision as to whether to ride or drive the 45 minutes to the track was an easy…

3rd Annual Great Southern Bike Rally - Douglas, Georgia

June 30, 2006
On May 26, I headed south down Hwy 441 to the Great Southern Bike Rally to attend one of the largest bike rallies in South Georgia. Every year it is held at the Douglas Municipal Airport. The three-hour ride went by very quickly. This year there was more heat and sunshine than rain. But no one missed seeing the rain. Saturday morning I decided to take a ride and check out the countryside. I knew I had about two hours before I had to be back in Douglas for the Veterans ride and bike games. In the past few months…

4th Annual Guns N Hoses Motorcycle Ride

June 30, 2006
The Khrome Cowgirls as well as many other bikers participated in the 4th Annual Guns N Hoses Motorcycle Ride on June 17, 2006. This was a benefit ride sponsored by Kansas City Metro area Police and Firefighters. The proceeds from the registration will be donated to Overland Park Police officer Bob Miller for his daughter Hannah who is fighting Burkitt’s lymphoma. We met at Lenexa Christian Center in Lenexa, Kansas where the ride was to begin. Coming into the drive of the church we were met with a fire truck with its boom ladder extended out across the drive marking…

27th Annual Run What You Brung - McLouth, Kansas

June 30, 2006
On the morning of Saturday, June 3, I woke up to a beautiful day of sunshine and a perfect day for riding! My husband and I mounted our scoots and headed down the road to the 27th Annual “Run What You Brung” held at the McLouth, Kansas fairgrounds. After making a quick stop at the state line to ditch our helmets, we headed through the Kansas countryside to the fairgrounds for a day of biker fun. As we arrived at the gate and paid our entry fee, both my husband and I were impressed with the location and set-up of…

7th Annual Sizzler Rally - Warsaw, Missouri

June 30, 2006
On June 23-25 FORR Local 35 held the 7th Annual Sizzler Rally in Warsaw, Missouri. This event is held at Bo’s Nevermind Campground, six miles south of Warsaw off Highway 7. Local 35 president Bob Hawkins and his wife (Local 35 treasurer), Linda, headed up the weekend fun with lots of help and donations from their local membership as well as many other volunteers and sponsors. With the cost only $15 for FORR members and $20 for non-members for the entire weekend of camping and fun, you couldn’t go wrong! The event included camping with showers, food, vendors, field event…

4th Annual Soul Brothers Drag Race - Kansas City, Missouri

June 30, 2006
June 25, 2006, was a day I was excited about going back to the legendary KCIR Speedway. Upon arrival, I was eager to start snapping photos of the true talent that is present at these events. Darwin Barnett was stationed at the entry booth with a smile having all of the gladiators sign the guest clipboard. I was directed to meet Mary, Darwin’s lovely wife, at the motor home to help her get set up with anything she needed and to make my base camp. I heard that wonderful noise that keeps me excited and wanting to return over and…

Cycle Connections People's Choice Ride-In Bike Show at KCIR

June 30, 2006
Sunday, June 25, 2006 was the date and the Kansas City International Raceway (KCIR) was the location for the Cycle Connections Bike Show, held in conjunction with the Soul Brothers 4th Annual Drag Race. Darwin Barnett of the Soul Brothers Drag Racing Team contacted Dave Miller and I and asked if we would be interested in sponsoring this year’s bike show at his annual drag race. Although we were already committed to covering several other events that weekend we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. We had bike show classes for Custom/Radical, American Cruiser, Metric Cruiser, Sportbike, Antique and Best in Show.…

2006 Land of OZ Rally - La Cygne, Kansas

June 30, 2006
A few weeks ago, I woke up way too early on a Saturday morning. Recognizing that 'early’ is a relative term, to me it means at least an hour or so before the sun rises. After living through a brutal week of work, and painfully aware that I was not going back to sleep, I decided that the best therapy for me would be to go for a ride into the country to watch the sun come up. On this occasion, I chose to head south and ended up near the La Cygne electrical generating station, about an hour from…

All Harley Drag Races - Commerce, Georgia

June 30, 2006
Memorial Day weekend had a great deal of motorcycle-related events to choose from, but Leigh and I decided on an all-Harley weekend with the Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson Southern National all Harley Drags, at the Atlanta Dragway presented by Drag Specialties. We had bike night at Lightning Strikes Friday night, which Cycle Connections helps sponsor, so we got up early Saturday morning and drove the three hours or so to the track. We stayed at the Howard Johnson again this year; they allow your four-legged family members to stay as well. There are several hotels right there together to choose from,…

13th Annual Honda Hoot Motorcycle Rally – Knoxville, Tennessee

June 30, 2006
Having now experienced a Honda Hoot, this “Hooter” now is a bit wiser. The 13th Annual Honda Hoot Motorcycle Rally, which attracts hundreds of vendors and thousands of motorcycle riders — mostly Honda riders, of course — took place June 20-24 in Knoxville, Tennessee. And since mid-April, plans had been underway for the “Three Amigos” to “saddle up” and head out on the highway for a 10-day motorcycle adventure via Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina and then arriving in Knoxville the first day of the Hoot. Comprising the group was Kurt Hoffman, Gardner, Kansas, on his Honda…

Indian Nations Ride

June 30, 2006
Have you ever just wanted to strike out on a ride to somewhere looking for the adventure? Well, one day that very thought came to me while driving home from vacation in my cage from Texas through Oklahoma where I was born and back home to Lee’s Summit. While looking at the land all around me, my thoughts traveled back in time as to how hard it must have been to travel across country like the Indians, pioneers and cowboys where the only modes of travel were horseback and wagons or walking. That's when I began to think of a…

The Silver Lining

June 30, 2006
The bright orange ball was fighting its way through the early morning mist as I twisted the throttle and climbed out of the low valley. Although I appreciated the beauty, I didn’t ignore the warning that it promised; yet another scorching day in Texas. I figured I would catch up on a couple of hours of work before I rode to Ft. Worth to meet up with the Patriot Guard Riders and attend a memorial service for yet another of our fallen heroes. Not at all a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning, but it does in its own…

The Moving Wall

June 30, 2006
The clocked screamed and the digital reading blinked 0400. It was time to wake up my houseguest Andy and head out to meet the wall. Andy Barksdale has been a friend of my wife and me since we met several years ago. Andy had just purchased a 2006 Street Glide and was anxious to take a trip. Coincidence or destiny, it just so happened that the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Moving Wall was passing close enough that we could make it to help provide an escort. We rode the 90 minutes between my house and Texas Motor Speedway in the early…

Spike’s 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Run

May 31, 2006
Saturday May 6 was cool and overcast and did not look like a great day for the 2nd Annual Spike’s Breast Cancer Run. It definitely was not a day for the fair weather riders. Although there was some concern early on about how many riders would show up, Anita Shaw, aka Spike, was not concerned that morning; her attitude was that the real bikers would be there, and she was right. The riders continued to arrive at the Brickyard in Olathe for the noon departure until the heat and roar of the cycles was over 300 strong. Spike’s Breast Cancer…
