Thunder on the River Ride-In Bike Show

May 31, 2005
A large ballroom with chandeliers and luxurious carpet provided an elegant setting for the inaugural Thunder on the River Ride-In Bike Show and Apparel Show in the Convention Center at Harrah’s North Kansas City Casino and Hotel. The event, jointly sponsored by the casino and Worth Harley-Davidson North, drew a field of around 50 stock, custom, and antique motorcycles competing for $100 cash prizes in the following categories: Best Engine, Best Paint, Best Display, Best Club Display and Best Ladies Bike. For the bike selected as Best in Show, the prize was $1,000. The event took place on Saturday, April…

3rd Annual Bikers Against Child Abuse Bike Show

May 31, 2005
Saturday, May 7 was a beautiful day for the 3rd Annual Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) Ride-In Bike Show. Several bikes lined both sides of the street in front of Knuckleheads Saloon as their owners registered for the show. The B.A.C.A. trailer was a hub of activity as members sat at a table in front of the trailer handing out literature about their club; while inside the trailer, a skilled artist from Kingpin Tattoos was busy applying someone’s new tat. There were several silent auction items laid out on a table. At the T-J Enter Prises booth next door, the…

Shawnee Protest Ride

May 31, 2005
They called it the Weenie ride to Shawnee City Hall to express opposition to the city’s consideration of a new noise ordinance that would specifically target motorcycles. Shawnee Cycle Plaza owner Barry Bunner, organizer of the ride, was hoping to get 100 motorcycles, but nearly 500 motorcyclists from throughout the area took the May 17 event to heart. Their presence at the city council committee meeting that night, as well as at the city’s council meeting May 23 apparently had an affect. The Shawnee City Council unanimously voted not to pursue looking into creating a new noise ordinance for the…

7th Annual Thunder Beach Spring Rally

May 31, 2005
Did you feel the rumble coming from the Gulf Coast? What thunder Mother Nature didn't provide, the thousands of motorcycle's did that invaded Panama City Beach Florida the last weekend in April, for the 7th Annual Thunder Beach Spring Rally. What better mix is there? You've got your surf, sand, buff bodies, scenic riding, thousands of awesome motorcycles, and did I mention-alcohol? There are probably just as many, if not more, bikes riding to the beach as there are those being given a 'lift' down. Our friends, Jim & Jeff from Bessie's Cycle Barn had a small posse leave from…

Touring America's Southwest - A Biker's Diary

May 31, 2005
For some years I have wanted to take a trip to America’s Southwest on my motorcycle, and shared this notion with Jon Watkins, my friend and riding buddy, a couple of years ago. He was way ahead of me, having already thought the plan through and even gathered some information about the sites and attractions there. Jon and I have ridden together for years, and have traveled this country from rally to rally, mountaintop to beach, and lots of places in between. I am a some-time photographer and a full-time computer geek, and Jon chases computer hackers for a living.…

POW – MIA Veteran Riders Motorcycle Club

May 31, 2005
I’m not sure where the month of May went, but it sure passed quickly! I trust all riders returned safely from the Rolling Thunder ride and the hundreds of other equally significant Memorial Day rider events. The month of June always seems to be a month to regroup from my mad dashes on the bike during April and May. Those two months are always insane for me, as I can never seem to get enough riding time in the fresh spring air and my desire to find and renew old friendships. June is a good month for me to plan…

3rd Annual Ride for Ryan

April 30, 2005
On August 11, 2002, Ryan Consolver’s life was tragically cut short at the age of 24 as a result of a motorcycle accident on Highway 169 in Kansas City. For several months following Ryan’s death, his parents, Rick and Janis of Union Star, Missouri, struggled to cope and to find a way to go on with their lives. Finally, they came up with a plan to honor Ryan’s memory while benefiting others. They decided to organize a motorcycle event called the Ride for Ryan that would be held on his next birthday in June, 2003. Supportive family and friends pitched…

7th Annual Cabin Fever Bash

April 30, 2005
It’s often said that the biker community is one of the most charitable groups of folks you’ll find. One of the key components of this benevolence in the Kansas City area is the Employee Riders Association (ERA) from the Harley-Davidson Assembly Plant in Platte County, Missouri. For the past seven years, this group has kicked off their fund-raising efforts at the start of the riding season with their annual Cabin Fever Bash. The ERA's rallying efforts for many local charities are considerable. As significant players in the annual Bikers for Babies® Ride since 1998, they have donated more than $50,000…

Gail’s Harley-Davidson Spring Fashion Show

April 30, 2005
Long-time Harley-Davidson riders remember when Harley apparel consisted of black T-shirts with a dealership logo on the back. The “new spring line” sported different designs on the front or maybe even a new dealership logo. The clothing rack was likely to be in one corner of the showroom floor that might have been in the same room with the service department. Harley-Davidson has come a long way, and so has their Motorclothes™ line! Harley dealerships of the Twenty-First Century typically have large areas dedicated to the sale of clothing and other general Harley merchandise. The company’s 2004 Annual Report quotes…

KC Creations “Thank You” Party

April 30, 2005
Dictionary.com defines the word party as “A social gathering especially for pleasure or amusement.” Kim and Cheryl Suter’s “Thank You” party definitely fit the definition to a “T.” Cheryl was so gracious as to invite yours truly, along with Stephanie and our editor-in-chief, Mike Schweder, to the event. The invitation could not have been more welcome as it saved me from a night of sitting home stewing over my interviews at the Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show the following day. Cheryl described the party as “A way for KC Creations to say thank you to Easyriders Events, the builders and some…

Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show 2005 - Kansas City

April 30, 2005
Well, we asked for it and we got it. Any writer would love to cover the Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show. This year’s show was scheduled for Saturday, April 9, so Stephanie and I decided if we were going to do it, we were going all out. We started back in January by getting contact info for the master builders. I had a master plan to schedule interviews as part of our event coverage. With the gracious help of Ivy and Sandy at Easyriders Events, as well as each of the master builders’ staff, we pulled it off and were able…

Old Highway 56 Car & Bike Show

April 30, 2005
Reece Good looked up at the blue sky and glared at the bright sun. April 23 was almost a picture perfect day for the first-ever Old 56 Car and Bike Show at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Gardner, Kansas. Almost a perfect day! It was about that time when a strong gust of wind came in from the north and hit Good on the back of the neck. He twinged from the chill. “I’m surprised at how many bikes showed up. It’s windy and cold,” Good said. Good, the owner of Ultra Craft Customers in Gardner, was one of the…

Dothan Bikefest – Alabama’s Largest Motorcycle Event!

April 30, 2005
You know, it just isn't a bike rally until people start showing skin and getting wet and Messy! We found that and more down in Dothan, Alabama the weekend of April 8, at the Dothan Bikefest, which is Alabama's largest bike rally! We had originally set out for this experience back in the fall, for what is now lovingly referred to as "Rainfest." It rained day and night for three days, but there was still one hell of a lot of fun to be had if you were staying in the campground, which we weren't. Twenty dollars gets you into…

Touring the Natchez Trace Parkway and Vicksburg, Mississippi

April 30, 2005
Anticipation of an upcoming big ride has always been part of the fun for me. I can only imagine how much fun it would be if that anticipation was my job. Planning for this trip was assembled by Larry, one of my newer riding buddies who recently retired from a leadership role in a large engineering firm. He now spends much of his time anticipating; that is anticipating another day without work! Larry is a meticulous person, so much that he uses Q-tips when he cleans his bike. But don’t confuse this attribute as a primary characteristic of his demeanor.…

A Time to Honor our Military Service Members - Present, Past and Still Missing

April 30, 2005
The month of May seems to put a little more spring in our step, especially as we head towards our waiting bikes. This month also brings us two important dates to honor those in the military who are serving now and those who have served and sacrificed their lives in the past: Armed Forces Day – May 21 and Memorial Day – May 30. The motorcycle community honors Memorial Day by participating in the annual Rolling Thunder ride, with the emphasis on our KIA/POW/MIAs. It is with great pleasure, that I’m able to share an interview conducted by Brandy Ballenger…

Special Olympics - Ride for the Run

March 31, 2005
If you've been reading this magazine for at least a year, then you know how much we care about Special Olympics. I wrote about them in March last year and Wayne wrote about them just a couple of months ago. Imagine my delight while I was out distributing flyers at local shops for another ride, when I saw a flyer for a ride benefiting Special Olympics. Once I got back home, I called Kelly Curran, Development Manager for Special Olympics Kansas, and asked her to tell me more about it. It's called a Ride for the Run, which will be…

Daytona Bike Week 2005

March 31, 2005
It's the 2005 Daytona Bike Week. What can you say, but wow…what a good time! Bike Week had lots to offer everyone, from the sandy shores, motorcycle races, beautiful women, vendors, Kennedy Space Center, wonderful weather, beautiful women, demo rides, thousands of visiting motorcycles, and did I mention beautiful women? The first thing we did after arriving, was head through the “loop,” a beautiful ride along the intercostal waterway with trees lining the road that meet overhead to create a canopy. Along the route, I spotted a van parked on the shoulder with the words, “HogPics” on it. I thought…
