Team Extreme at Cycles n More Bike Show

February 28, 2006
On of the really cool features of the Cycles n More Bike Show is the inclusion of stunt performances by members of the Stunt Tours Network. During this year’s show, trials rider Jess Kempkes rode his trials bike over a complex and challenging obstacle course, and brothers Erwin and Melvin Urias performed a difficult series of loops and cris-crosses inside a motosphere know as the Globe of Death. Jess demonstrated delicate control and precision balance during his performance. In addition to negotiating the difficult obstacles, Jess did a series of wheelies, stoppies, and no-ramp jumps inside the tight confines of…

Veteran's Tribute Motorcycle

February 28, 2006
'Honoring the men and women who serve or have served our country' This motorcycle is dedicated to the individuals who have served or are serving in any of the branches of the United States Armed Forces and their families. The sacrifices made by those brave men and women - and their families - to keep our country free, and make it possible for us to enjoy the privileges of living in the greatest nation on earth. The concept for this motorcycle was conceived by Gary and Brenda Towers of Granbury, Texas. It began as a personal dream for Gary whose father;…

Trampled Under Foot

February 28, 2006
“My appeal is my soul. My music is my soul, my voice is my soul and I am so grateful that anyone enjoys or relates to or even likes to watch it, as long as it is respected as my soul” ……Danielle Schnebelen, Trampled Under FootDanielle Schnebelen is one of Kansas City’s musical treasures. Stephanie and I first heard her a few summers ago performing in the band “Fresh Brew.” We were hooked immediately. Our Sunday plans for the rest of the summer included relaxing afternoons enjoying Danielle’s voice. Danielle has received every possible kind of compliment from local publications,…

2nd Annual Christian Bikers' Workshop-Cycle Disciples M/C

January 31, 2006
On Saturday morning, January 14, the Cycle Disciples of Kansas City sponsored their 2nd annual Christian Bikers’ Workshop. Again this year, chapter president Teddy Bitner, a.k.a. the Colonel, extended an invitation to Cycle Connections to cover the event. In addition, he requested that someone from the magazine staff make a presentation on the role of the motorcycle media. Public speaking is not my area of expertise, but I had enjoyed the previous year’s workshop and wanted to do my part to contribute to the success of this year’s event, so I accepted the assignment. The workshop was held in a…

25th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle Show - Washington, DC

January 31, 2006
Prologue DC is one of the most exciting places in the world to own a two-wheeled vehicle. It’s said that “half the drivers are lost and confused, another 25 percent are diplomats (“their last ride was a camel...”) and the rest are congressmen under indictment!” This is an exciting scenario so have fun but pay attention… those cages will kill you and they won’t even notice… and they won’t be charged because they have “diplomatic immunity.” On the upside, this mix of maniacs is bound to improve your riding skills. You are either good or you are history. Two wheelers…

Khrome Cowgirls 2nd Birthday Party

January 31, 2006
Sisterhood, commitment, loyalty, compassion, caring, strong leadership and organized. These are the words I heard over and over from members on Saturday, January 14 at theKhrome Cowgirls 2nd birthday party celebration. And what a celebration it was in attendance considering they started with less than 30 members and now are 89 strong. That speaks volumes for this group and its leadership.Word of mouth has been the biggest recruiting tool so far, and they look forward to adding even more members this year. As I roamed the crowd talking to various members, they all have stories about how they got involved with…

Polar Bear Ride with Greater Kansas City H.O.G.

January 31, 2006
The name Polar Bear Ride implies frigid, wintry weather conditions. Fortunately for Kansas City bikers, it was a misnomer again this year for the traditional January 1st ride hosted by the Greater Kansas City H.O.G. Chapter. As always, the event was open to all riders and all makes of motorcycles with the stipulation that a liability release be signed. The ride began at the Children's Fountain a few miles north of downtown Kansas City. After three years as Chapter Director, Pat Honn decided not to run for re-election, so his last official duty was to lead this ride. The turnout…

SE&TRA Hare Scramble – Washington, Georgia

January 31, 2006
Washington, Georgia, January 22, the South Eastern Enduro & Trail Riders Association (SE&TRA) was at Anoia Pass Motocross Park for their Hare Scramble race. Let me start off by saying, I have a newfound respect for people who race off-road! It's a sport that requires you and your bike to be in top physical condition! Saturday was the practice day. All the riders except for a few were slow to arrive Saturday due to the rain. Only a few riders were out for the practice session. I think most of the riders were waiting to see what the rain was…

Wide Open Bike Show - Kansas City

January 31, 2006
Kansas City's bike show season officially got under way on January 20 through 22, kicked off by the Wide Open Bike Show at 3-Trails Expo Center on Hillcrest Road north of Bannister Mall. The 90,000 square foot facility worked out well for Wide Open Magazine's first bike show in the Kansas City area. Show bikes and vendors were set up on both floors of the facility, and several bands performed on stage on the upper level throughout the weekend. Admission was $12 with discounts of $2 per ticket available via coupons that could be obtained at various area businesses. There…

Veteran Riders on the Move

January 31, 2006
Recently at a meeting of motorcycle enthusiasts, veterans were requested to stand and to be recognized. Scattered throughout the crowd was a large number of vets from periods spanning Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and others in between. As American flags were passed out to each of these, it became clear that the impact of veterans on the riding scene is huge. Rides honoring vets and put forth by vets are growing in number year after year and a quick look at the Internet will reveal many rides and events sponsored for and by the veterans of American military service. The…

Final Mission for Sergeant First Class Stephen J. White

January 31, 2006
On a cold, dark, rain-soaked Tuesday, January 17, 2005, Stephen J. White was laid to rest at Pinehill Memorial Cemetery in his hometown of Talladega, Alabama. Stephen White was first, a man, a husband, father, brother, son, friend, and second a soldier, working for the whole country to help preserve all of our freedoms, as well as helping others to realize theirs. Sergeant First Class Stephen J. White, was a non-commissioned officer, a leader, and he received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Sharpshooter Qualification Badge, Good Conduct medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Army Achievement Medal,…

Levee Town - Kansas City’s Rocked Up Blues Band

January 31, 2006
For this month’s band review I decided to go with the band we spend most of our summer Sunday afternoons with. We eagerly ride the 40 miles to the Kansas City River Market to join our friends for the “rocked up blues” of Kansas City’s own Levee Town. If you follow the Kansas City blues scene at all, you have no doubt heard of this band. If you have never heard Levee Town, you don’t know what you are missing. Levee Town is comprised of Brandon Huspeth, Jan Faircloth, Jimmie Meade and Jacque (pronounced Jack) Garoutte. You may recognize the…

Cycle Connections First Poker Run to Benefit Habitat for Humanity

December 31, 2005
Cycle Connections held our very first poker run Saturday, November 19, 2005, to help benefit Habitat for Humanity and the hurricane evacuees who are living here at Oak Mountain. We know that the willingness to help others in need runs deep when it comes to the motorcycle community anywhere in the country. To this end, Leigh and I decided, after so many of our friends were affected by the hurricanes, that we should do what we could to help, and what better help to enlist than that of the motorcycle community here in the South. We have already been in touch…

Cycle Connections Bike Show to Benefit Toys for Tots

December 31, 2005
Saturday November 12, 2005, Cycle Connections hosted our first bike show with The Tattoo Jungle in Trussville and Bessie’s Cycle Barn in Irondale as our sponsors. We are in the middle of “Roll Tide”—“War Eagle” football down here in Alabama, so getting guys to do things not football related, on Saturdays especially, is like pulling teeth. But we managed to have a nice “small” showing just the same! Calvin at All Sports Trophy next to Jim’s Super Pawn in Centerpoint was generous enough to donate our beautiful first and second place trophies. They had silver prism risers with a motorcycle…

Cookson Hills Toy Run - Tampa, Florida - The Essence of “Old School”

December 31, 2005
Toy runs in the Tampa Bay area pretty much run the gamut of everything from huge events with a great amount of coordinating involved simply due to their size, to smaller undertakings done on a personal level amongst friends for the sheer joy of helping those less fortunate and serving as an “in your face” reminder that the majority of us have it pretty good. Beginning about 20 years ago, a group of 20 or so friends and I did a small personal style toy run every year and pretty successfully. We'd find a family through a co-worker’s church that…

ABATE Toy Run at AP’s Hideaway – Macon, Georgia

December 31, 2005
The bikers of Macon, Milledgeville, and, Gray, Georgia and the surrounding areas came together in support of the Georgia Industrial Children’s Home. At noon the bikers began to register for the 1 p.m. ride from Jughead’s of Byron. There were more than 200 riders who donated $10 to join the run across town to Hideaway. The bikers were escorted by the Macon Police Department from Byron. Upon the arrival of the bikers, around 1:30 p.m., a BBQ lunch was served. The bikers didn’t waste any time getting in line for the food. Alice Padgette, the owner of AP’S Hideaway, helped…

Twisted Throttle Chopper Christmas - Madison, Georgia

December 31, 2005
The First Annual Twisted Throttle Chopper Christmas Blowout in Madison, Georgia got off to a great start with food and drink. This December 10th was the first big event at T.T.C. at their new location. Bubba Camp and his gang had invited all bikers to come out to enjoy the festivity. This cold afternoon the bikers still came riding in to see the new owner of the shop. There were bikers from Milledgeville, Covington and Lake Oconee. Bubba put in a billiard's table and a poker table to get the bikers to come in and just hang out. To me,…

Milledgeville Thunder Rally - Milledgeville, Georgia

December 31, 2005
Milledgeville Thunder Rally October 7-9 is the last big party of the year before cold weather arrives to put a damper on riding. This little college town northeast of Macon, Georgia comes alive three times a year so that the bikers can party and ride their bikes. Milledgeville, Georgia is like Daytona was in the early days of Bike Week. This weekend the rain didn't stop the bikers from having a big party. I found bikers from five different states came to enjoy the party. Some bikers rode more than 300 miles to join in the fun of being at…
