What Memorial Day Means to Me

May 31, 2006
Memorial Day throughout my childhood always signaled the coming of summer and the end of school. Soon there would be days when I wouldn’t need to get up for school, times when I could play with friends, and vacations with my grandparents fishing in Minnesota. Memorial Day was a time for barbecues and an evening in the park playing with family and friends. I had no idea what the real meaning of the day was nor did I care. The men huddled around the grill cooking food for lunch and then would head off to talk about things kids wouldn’t…

Crisis – No Mercy

May 31, 2006
Hard Rock is a term loosely applied to a wide variety of music depending on the generation you grew up in. Rock Hard, on the other hand is associated with many things, the least of which is music. For Crisis, the three piece power trio from Olathe, Rock Hard is a fitting principle to their sound. Their debut album, “No Mercy,” released this spring, is a testament to that. In the song, Living Contradiction, the lyrics say it all “the weapon of choice is volume!” If you’ve seen them live, you could not disagree. With metal in their blood, Crisis…

Steve “Bub” Ford – Prayers and Help Needed For a Fallen Brother

April 30, 2006
After not owning a motorcycle for about three decades, Steve “Bub” Ford bought a used Harley so he could go cruising with his friends and his son. With his wife on behind him he headed out on April 1 with nine other bikes for a get-together at the dealer’s place. No one knows why, but for some reason Bub didn’t make a curve in the road (there was no speeding or impaired judgment involved) and went down an embankment. His wife fell off the bike early in the plunge and suffered only minor injuries, but Bub wasn’t so lucky. He…

2nd Annual St. Jude Poker Run – Eatonton, Georgia

April 30, 2006
On April 15, 2006, in Eatonton, Georgia, the Oconee Chapter #400 of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club held its Second Annual Poker Run. The riders started coming in from as far away as Savannah, Loganville, and Macon, Georgia to raise money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude Children's Hospital is one of the largest childhood cancer research centers in the world for patients enrolled on a research study protocol. St. Jude opened back in 1962 in Memphis with the help of the entertainer Danny Thomas. ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) helps find different…

Greater Kansas City H.O.G. Assists Special Olympics

April 30, 2006
Every year, Special Olympics in the Kansas City Metro Area depends on numerous individual and group volunteers to assist with their Area Track and Field Meet. One group that never fails to participate is the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Harley Owners Group. For many years, members and guests of G.K.C. H.O.G. have enjoyed managing the men’s and boys’ 100-meter running and walking competitions. This year I had the honor of coordinating the H.O.G. volunteer recruiting, an easy task since so many are eager to participate. I drafted a newsletter article and spoke at a couple of the group’s monthly…

Milledgeville Thunder Rally – Milledgeville, Georgia

April 30, 2006
I came riding in at Thunder Rally in Milledgeville, Georgia on April 7, and found the place packed with bikers from Florida to Tennessee and South Carolina to Texas. Motorcyclists came to this little college town to join in the three-day party. I am always surprised at each event about the sheer number of bikers who come to Milledgeville each time. This year the bikers didn't wait for Saturday to come. Motorcyclists came in all day Friday until late Saturday afternoon. When I first walked into the vendor area, I met F. Draco from Meridian, Mississippi. I learned that he…

Fun Times at Gail's Harley-Davidson

April 30, 2006
There is always something fun going on at Gail’s Harley-Davidson in Grandview, Missouri. I recently attended two great events there within the span of three days. The first clue that Gail’s Spring Fashion Show, held on Thursday evening, March 30, would have a western theme was the mailed invitation. It was decorated with horseshoes and invited recipients to “… mosey on down..” to the dealership. The new Harley-Davidson motorcycles yielded their showroom space, at least for one evening, to a large stage. After enjoying beverages and h’ors douvres, those in attendance had the opportunity to see the latest in Harley…

Riders Harley-Davidson 30th Anniversary - Birmingham, Alabama

April 30, 2006
This year, Riders Harley-Davidson in Trussville, Alabama, turns 30! You have definitely come a long way baby! It’s hard to believe looking at them now that Riders was born from such humble beginnings in the basement of Bill Peek’s parents home in Oneonta, Alabama, where a family friend threw the name “Riders” at Bill when he told them he needed a name for his business so he could order parts. Prior to that, Bill and a friend of his would work on people's motorcycles. Back then, there weren’t a lot of choices to get work done or get parts for…

Barn Burner at Bessie’s Cycle Barn - Irondale, Alabama

April 30, 2006
On Sunday, March 26, Bessie’s Cycle Barn in Irondale, Alabama hosted their second swap meet, the first one this season. We were thinking since it was a little chilly first thing that morning that it would be later in the day before a lot of people showed up. We were wrong. They had their own “traffic control” in place by the time we arrived, which was a good thing! They had vendors all over the place, like the folks from”Smitty’s Flying Circus”cooking ears of corn, and the Veterans Brotherhood MC did the “dogs”—hot dogs! The CMA had hot chocolate and…

The Anniversary Ride

April 30, 2006
She thought it was all about the bike. I wanted her to think that. I spent six months planning a ride on the motorcycle where I could ride and be together with my wife. I planned rides across five states, across the lower Southwest, across the lower Southeast…anywhere. But, she lit a fuse. During one of our conversations she mentioned that she liked the description of a ride to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Well, I called and called and all of the hotels were booked full. Did I mention that our 25th anniversary and Easter shared the same weekend? I planned…

The Bob Harvey Band - A Song by Us

April 30, 2006
One of the questions we like to ask musicians is, “What CD is in your CD player right now?” The answer to that question, if answered honestly, can sometimes reveal where true passions lie. The CD in my car right now is “Gasoline & Perfume” by the Bob Harvey Band. I first heard Bob play solo four summers ago at a local bike shop anniversary party and have been a loyal fan and follower ever since. This biker-friendly band, comprised of Bob Harvey (guitar and vocals), Chad Osborne (drums and vocals), and Eric Nettle (bass) has been described as a…

2nd Annual Spike’s Breast Cancer Run – Saturday, May 6, 2006

March 31, 2006
Nobody wants to hear the doctor say the “C” word. It’s even more difficult for a mother when it’s her daughter being told cancer had been detected. It is a helpless feeling. Anita Shaw, Olathe, Kansas, knows that feeling. Anita’s daughter Jessica Freeman, Spring Hill, Kansas, was diagnosed with breast cancer just before Jessica’s 30th birthday in 2004.“You just don’t know what to do,” Anita said, recalling that moment nearly two years ago. Jessica, who works for the City of Olathe, had a mastectomy and is a cancer survivor and now is active in helping to raise awareness and funds…

9th Annual Cabin Fever Bash – Kansas City, Missouri

March 31, 2006
Raising money for local charities? Doing things for local communities? That’s not the image of a biker…is it? Well, it certainly is for members of the Employee Riders Association (ERA). Employees at the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Plant in Kansas City, Missouri have been working hard the past eight years become more involved in their communities and local charities. The employees kicked off the 2006 riding season with their 9th Annual Cabin Fever Bash on March 18 at the Beaumont Club in Westport, Missouri. The event, which featured the bands Four Fried Chickens and a Coke, The Jeff Scheetz Band, a magician,…

Great American Motorcycle Show - Kansas City, Missouri

March 31, 2006
The 46th Annual Carquest Auto Parts World of Wheels show took place at Kansas City’s Bartle Hall the weekend of March 17 through 19. Those who attended were treated to two great shows for the price of one. Worth Harley Davidson North and Blue Springs Harley Davidson, with support from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), annually sponsor the Great American Motorcycle Show during World of Wheels. The hall was packed with a wide variety of street rods, custom cars and trucks, antiques, racecars, and, of course, motorcycles. There were several featured vehicles including the original…

22nd Annual Snake Saturday Parade – Kansas City, Missouri

March 31, 2006
North Kansas City was the place to be on March 11, 2006, where the Annual Snake Saturday Parade is held each year. Snake Saturday celebrates the legend of St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, and a parade is now held each year to celebrate the legend as well as to raise funds for many local charities and not-for-profit organizations. North Kansas City began having this parade many years ago. The first parade was actually a promotion for the local Roadway Inn and was held in the parking lot. There were only three floats that year but now that…

Adrenaline Extreme Combat - Kansas City, Missouri

March 31, 2006
I saw a fight a few nights back in Westport. Actually I saw several. I know, I know, no big deal, right? Wrong. These were not the usual “I got my courage out of a bottle” fights. These were Adrenaline Extreme Combat fights at the Beaumont Club. My buddies, promoter Chad Osborne and International Sport Karate/Kickboxing Association-Mixed Martial Arts (ISKA-MMA) official David Salyers, invited Stephanie and me to check out this event, and I was blown away. The AEC matches are ISKA-MMA sanctioned events held inside a chain link cage and are nonstop action from start to finish. If you…

Media Day at Steve Johnson Racing – Irondale, Alabama

March 31, 2006
We are very fortunate here in Alabama in that we get to experience a little of all four of the seasons, which in turn means ample riding days throughout the year. And there is a lot to do around here with great rides in any direction. There is the track at Talladega, which brings in NASCAR and all of the NASCAR fans. And for the motorcycles, there is the beautiful, world-renowned Barber Motorsports Park. And Barber’s is still growing, adding even more things of interest for the motorcycle enthusiast. What a lot of people don’t know is that we also…

19th Annual Run to the Sun East – Savannah, Georgia

March 31, 2006
Coastal Empire Fairgrounds in Savannah, Georgia came alive with bikers from all over the eastern United States. Some were on their way to Daytona Beach and others came to party for the weekend. On March 3, ABATE opened the gates at 5 p.m. to start the festivity. This event is a gathering point for bikers to the make the run to Daytona. This is one big event in Savannah that helps to bring in the new riding season. The trip down I-16 is a very strange and pleasant ride to me. Interstate 16 is one of the few major highways…
