8th Annual Joshua Berry Ride for the Burkett Center - Morris, Alabama

Written by  October 31, 2017

It was an absolutely beautiful day as bikes started rolling into Riders Harley-Davidson in Trussville, Alabama for registration to the Burkett Center Ride.

The William E. Burkett Center is a school for the multi–handicapped. Each year, the Burkett Center serves approximately 80 students; ages 3 through 21 years of age. All students attending the Burkett Center have multiple disabilities, and the program draws students from most areas served by the Jefferson County Board of Education. That just scratches the surface as to what this wonderful school, with its awesome principal Mr. Daniel Roth, provide for these kids!

As everyone gathered to register, they were treated to some really good, and really fattening donuts from Donut Joe’s in Gardendale, Alabama. They had a few left over, and somehow a box ended up back at the house with us!

After we filled up on delicious donuts, Shane Harris did a quick prayer over the riders and the ride. It was then time to mount up and follow our county escort bikes and David Leemon who were leading the ride.

The ride is sponsored by the Burkett Center P.T.A. and assisted by the C.H.R.O.M.E Cross Cruisers, riders from the CMA.

As usual, we took the scenic route over to the school, and as always it was a very nice ride. Principal Roth and a few of the kids were in front of the school waiting as we all rolled in. We still couldn’t convince our escorts to stay and have lunch with us, but like today, they always have somewhere else to go when they drop us off.

Some of the CMA members helping out were, Mike and Sheri Aycock, Dennis and Donna Brooks, Rick and Becky Woodman, and Donna and David Leemon, who led the ride. They all worked really hard on pulling this together, gathering donations, and setting things up. They had lunch setup and ready for us when we arrived.

This year, Blue Grass BBQ in Leeds generously stepped in and donated BBQ sandwiches for everyone! It was SO GOOD! Thanks Guys! Piggly Wiggly in Warrior donated the chips, Coca Cola donated drinks, and Buds Best cookies donated cookies.

There were several businesses that donated goodies to the giveaway pile, and Jeff Dennis Jewelers in Gardendale once again donated the grand prize of a $250 gift card, which Ms Lucky pants Vicky Veil won, along with a bunch of other things. She, along with the kids, were the big winners of the day!

This is one of our two favorite rides to do each year, for good reason.

At the Burkett Center, their mission is to promote independence for all students through self-help, communication, and work skills. The Burkett Center is a place where the smallest accomplishments of each student are celebrated and the unique beauty of each child is recognized, a place where each child is made to feel special!
