3rd Annual Camp Valor Outdoors Patriot Ride – Holden, Missouri

Written by  May 31, 2017

84 bikers came out in support of veterans on a beautiful sunny morning on May 13, 2017. The riders started from either the Independence, Missouri American Legion Hall or from Yeager Cycle in Sedalia, Missouri and met in the middle for a celebration honoring veterans in the parking lot of the Holden Community Activity Center in Holden, Missouri.

They were met there by many veterans and supporting people. All veterans, whether they rode on the ride or not, were treated to a free BBQ lunch provided by Bare Bones Smokin’ BBQ in Pleasant Hill, Missouri. There was also a band, Oxline Road, playing with a special guest musician: Steve Scorfina, who was a member of the original REO Speedwagon.

There were booths set up with Dept. of Veterans Affairs representatives, VFW, others. A booth was also available to sew commemorative patches on the rider’s vests. A huge bounce house and an exotic animal display kept the younger attendees busy while the adults bid in the massive silent auction and participated in several drawings.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Association transported a Huey helicopter to the site that the Vietnam era veterans enjoyed climbing in and out of as they told stories to one other. The program started with the introduction of Congresswoman Vickie Hartzler, who gave a short speech thanking all the veterans, and especially the Vietnam veterans, who didn’t get the proper thank you and support when they arrived home. Leaders of several veteran’s associations added a few words following the congresswoman’s speech. A stirring speech was then delivered by Missouri’s only living Medal of Honor recipient, Col. Don “Doc” Ballard. All the Vietnam Veterans were called to the front of the stage, where Congresswoman Hartzler presented each of them a commemorative pin and posed with them for a group photo. Congresswoman Harzler then presented a plaque to The Healing Box Project, which is a small group that gives guitars and playing lessens to veterans to help them cope with emotional problems.

The end of the ceremony brought a couple on stage that presented a tracked wheelchair to Camp Valor, so veterans who are bound to a wheelchair can go hunting and fishing. The final activity of the day involved the whole crowd joining together to sing America the Beautiful.
