12th Annual Christian Biker Workshop - Kansas City, Missouri

Written by  January 24, 2016

On Saturday, January 2, bikers gathered in the Langmade Room at Calvary Bible College and Theological Seminary for the 12th Annual Christian Biker Workshop sponsored by Cycle Disciples M/C. Coffee and donuts were provided by the host club. There were 43 in attendance including members of several Christian groups such as Christian Motorcyclists Association, Bikers for Christ, and Heart of God Fellowship.

Following the opening prayer, Teddy Bitner, a.k.a. Colonel, began the program with a welcome and announcements. He introduced the first speaker, Ed Dougherty, who represented the Biker Charity Award Project. Phil Holloway and Ed, partners at D&H Law, and Gary Kuzmich, CEO of Compass Global Group, LLC, sponsor and promote the award. This will be the third year that a local charity will be selected as Biker Charity of the Year. The winner will be chosen from among more than 35 motorcycle-related charities, and $3,000 will be divided among the top ten charity organizations.

The next topic was human trafficking with the Colonel making the presentation. This crime takes on many forms and is very widespread. It’s good to be aware of the signs that a human trafficking situation exists so that authorities can be informed.

There was discussion of upcoming events of interest to motorcyclists with participants providing information to update the calendar. Paul Snell of the Christian Motorcyclists Association talked about the Run for the Son that is scheduled for May 7. Pastor Bob Kaps from the Heart of God Fellowship in Buckner, Missouri, provided information about his church’s Biker Sunday scheduled for April 17 and the Tougher than Hell Poker Run to be held June 25 raising money for a camp for children with cancer. Dan Doty, Executive Director of City Union Mission, invited everyone to the 27th Annual Bikers with a Mission Run for the Homeless on June 11.

A presentation by the Colonel on concealed carry for motorcyclists was next and was followed by Bill McCormack’s annual talk about one-on-one ministry. Bill has many years of experience in the biker culture and in ministering to those in need. His talks are always very inspirational.

Each year the Cycle Disciples present the Kickstand Award to an individual or group in recognition of significant contributions to the Kansas City area motorcycling community. Previous recipients of this honor include Ralph Wayne Blackmore, Guy Girratano, Kim Suter, Bill McCormack, Ray Worth, Richard and Connie Kephart, the Patriot Guard Riders, 101 the Fox radio personality Slacker, Reverend Bob Kaps, and the Kansas City Chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse. Ken and Rebecca Ramey were selected by the Cycle Disciples board to receive the 2016 Kickstand Award. Most of their service is behind the scenes, freely given with little recognition. They have assisted with the Bikers With a Mission event for about ten years in support of the City Union Mission. They have also been involved with HOG, God’s Wheels, and Freedom of Road Riders. Congratulations to the Rameys from Cycle Connections.

We appreciate everyone who took part in the program and thank the Cycle Disciples for hosting the event. The Christian Biker Workshop is an inspirational and informative event every year.
