Proceeds from the annual S.C.A.R. poker run go to assist Cancer Action of Kansas City. That organization’s mission statement is, “As a caring community of professionals and volunteers, Cancer Action is dedicated to reducing distress and improving the quality of life for those living with, through and beyond cancer; and promote education, prevention early detection to reduce the impact of cancer in the greater Kansas City area.” Their vision statement is, “Cancer Action compassionately provides program and supportive services for those living with, through and beyond cancer in the Kansas City area.” Cancer Action provides free services such as practical and direct services, financial assistance, educational and emotional support, and wellness programs. Please visit the organization’s website for much more information.

Participants in this year’s ride included 38 motorcyclists and car people with 8 passengers. On site registration opened at Blue Springs Harley-Davidson at 9 a.m. on October 3. The ride fee was $25 per bike/car, $10 passenger. The first wave of the ride was led by KCTV 5's Gary Amble. Cash prizes of $100 and $25 were awarded for the best and worst poker hands, respectively. Poker Stops were at Blue Springs Harley Davidson, Buckner Accounting and Tax Services in Buckner, Spotted Pig in Lexington, Baskin Robbins in Bates City, and Side Pockets, in Blue Springs. At Side Pockets there was a ride-in bike show with the following results: Best of show and Best Cruiser - Betty Ford, Best Touring/Bagger - Jeff Blystone, Sportster - Adam Johnson, and Sport Bike - Kim Blystone. The car show winners list was not available, but first place went to a really nice Thunderbird.

The list of donated prizes for the live auction and silent auction was long and impressive (see below), and there were drawings for raffle prizes and 50/50. Proceeds for Cancer Action amounted to $7,000 including over $900 generously donated by Blue Springs Harley-Davidson and the Greater Kanas City H.O.G. Chapter and money raised throughout the year by Maiden Designs jewelry sales. Event coordinator Paula Gunn said, “I would like to thank the G.K.C. H.O.G. Chapter members for their help, especially Jeff and Kim Blystone, people at the stops - Terri Tinker and Bobby Barnes, Bob & Betty Ford, and Jennifer Johnson and Meredith Keller, and the stops for letting us use their places of business.  Thanks to Gary Amble from KCTV5 for his participation. We would also like to thank Cancer Action for their help to ease some of the burdens of cancer patients and their families and also, for the support of Karla Nichols, the Executive Director of Cancer Action.” Event sponsors included Maiden Designs, Blue Springs Harley Davidson, and MO-KAN Volkswagen Club. Planning has already begun for the 4th annual ride to be held in October, 2016.
