2013 Heartland Police Motorcycle Challenge - Independence, Missouri

Written by  November 1, 2013

The Heartland Police Motorcycle Association was formed in September 2010 with the goal of emphasizing the importance of continued training in an effort to improve the safety of police motorcycle operations in conjunction with raising money for various charity organizations or groups. Each year the association conducts a police motorcycle training seminar/competition. The event gives motor officers an opportunity to hone their riding skills while providing the general public with a chance to observe and appreciate the amazing way the competitors are able to maneuver their police bikes. The large parking lot outside the Macy’s store at the Independence Center becomes a sea of orange cones marking the courses for the competition.

The 2013 Challenge was held on September 12 through 14 with the finals of all events scheduled on Saturday. Twenty-two officers representing ten law enforcement agencies competed. Challenges included speed course, accuracy course, slow ride, four-man ride, and barrel race five-man. Spectators got to see some impressive riding as the officers demonstrated their ability to navigate their heavy mounts through a complex maze of tight turns, figure eights, and slalom weaves. There was also a Police Expo displaying all kinds of police equipment and vehicles, and the youngsters could test their riding skills on the bicycle course.

The association appreciated the support of their sponsors including Chick-fil-A at Independence Center (Thursday lunch), Infinity Building Services and Hooters (Friday lunch), Big Iron Town of Pleasant Hill (Saturday lunch), Independence Center, and Macy’s. Also appreciated were the volunteers who provided assistance during the competition.

In addition to videos in this article, more information, photos, and videos are available on the organization’s Facebook page, event page, and website.
