Cycle Connections 1st Annual Bike Show

Written by  September 30, 2005

The 1st Annual Cycle Connections People’s Choice Ride-In Bike show took place on Saturday, September 10, 2005 in conjunction with this year’s Blue Springs BBQ Blaze Off State Championship Barbeque Contest.

We had a great turnout for our bike show and the Blaze Off, drew record crowds of between 8,000 to 10,000 people. The main sponsor of this year’s barbeque contest was Blue Springs Harley-Davidson, which is what gave Blaze Off committee the idea of having a bike show.

Darin, a committee member contacted me to see if we would be interested and I jumped at the chance. The Blue Springs BBQ Blaze Off is the third largest barbeque contest in the Kansas City area, next to the American Royal and Lenexa Barbeque, so we knew that if the weather was good we should have a good turnout.

We had bike show classes for Custom/Radical, American Cruiser, Metric Cruiser, Sportbike, Antique and Best in Show. We also had a young man ride in on his own mini chopper so we created a special class just for him. We found out that he has been riding for two years so we figured it wouldn’t be long before he’d be trading his bike in for something a little bigger. There was no entry fee and the winner of each class would receive a nice trophy and a Blue Springs Harley-Davidson gift certificate. The second and third place winners in each class would receive ribbons and an honorable mention ribbon would be given to all participants.

Around 8:30 a.m. bikes started rolling into the Blue Springs High School parking lot where our bike show was held. By 10:30 a.m. we had several bikes entered in each class. We also invited American Bikers Relief Fund and Friends of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (FOTCWR) – Kansas City to set up a booth in the parking lot and DJ Steve Weller, a.k.a. The Big Kahuna was on hand to play some great biker tunes.

At 11 a.m. the people’s choice bike show judging began and Cycle Connections girls Rhonda, Brandy, Margaret and Nicole made their way through the barbeque area to pass out ballots, which also doubled as a raffle drawing entry form for a free Jack Daniels leather bomber jacket we were giving away, courtesy of MotorcycleCloseouts.com in North Kansas City, Missouri.

By the time the voting closed at 2:30 p.m. our ballot box was jammed full of ballots and the task of counting them soon began. It took our staff almost a full hour to count all the ballots, which left us only 15 minutes to get everything together and head to the main stage to announce the winners.
