Rides, Rallies and Events Recap

Sturgis Events & Sponsors Contribute to Charities - Sturgis, South Dakota

Written by  December 31, 2011

The City of Sturgis Rally Department recently announced that the 9th Annual Sturgis Mayor’s Ride held Monday, August 8, during the 2011 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally contributed $11,000 to the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department, $3,000 to the Sturgis Police Department Reserves and $1,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The Mayor’s ride was originally established as a fundraiser to support the important functions of the fire department including not only fighting fires, but also responding to accidents and other emergency situations. This year Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen chose to add the Sturgis Police Reserves and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to those receiving shares of the funds raised by the event.

Participants in the 2011 Mayor’s Ride were joined by representatives of presenting sponsor Jack Daniel's; South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard and his wife, Linda; Office of Tourism Director Jim Hagen; several members of the state legislature; Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen; and local city council members on an escorted ride through the spectacular scenery of the Black Hills. The tour included scenic Bear Butte State Park, a stop in Belle Fourche to visit the geographic Center of the Nation landmark, awesome Spearfish Canyon, and the famous gold mining town of Lead. The group then rode through historic Deadwood and down Boulder Canyon, returning to Sturgis to enjoy a delicious luncheon with the mayor and his special guests. “The Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department would like to again thank the mayor and the Mayor’s Ride sponsors and participants for their continued support,” said Fire Chief Ron Koan. “The funds generated annually from the Mayor’s Ride allow the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department to purchase equipment and provide volunteer firefighting services, which otherwise would be funded by taxpayer dollars.“ “This is just another way that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally benefits the community,” stated Mayor Carstensen. “We ask a great deal of our volunteer firefighters year round, but especially during the Rally and the weeks leading up to it. With the help of our sponsors and the generosity of the people, who participated in the Mayor’s Ride this year, we were able to once again give the fire department and other organizations additional funding needed.” The 9th Annual Mayor’s Ride was supported by presenting sponsor Jack Daniel’s, with additional sponsorship support from Ford Motor Company – Built Ford Tough, GEICO, Black Hills Power Corporation, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, South Dakota Pork Producers – Pork the Other White Meat, Rosenbauer Firefighting Technology, AMA, Knology and Medtec.

In addition, according to Brenda Vasknetz, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Director for the City of Sturgis, December is the time for wrapping up current year rally business and beginning preparations for the next rally. An important part of that process is recognizing and thanking the rally sponsors. “These corporations make an investment in, and form a relationship with, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and the community of Sturgis in return for the opportunity to have heightened exposure for their brand with the hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts who come to Sturgis each year for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally,” Vasknetz stated. “This year, the City of Sturgis will present the Sturgis Rally Charities Foundation with a check for $25,145.85 which comes directly from the funds invested with the City of Sturgis by our corporate Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors,” added Vasknetz. According to Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie, the investment by the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to the city’s bottom line. “The sponsors’ investment makes a significant reduction to the expense line in our budget,” Ainslie added. “In addition to their sponsorship fees, the sponsors also provide many in-kind goods and services, including fire trucks and ambulances, promotional t-shirts, Sturgis Motorcycle Rally promotional advertising in national publications and on TV, scoreboards and signage at athletic venues throughout Sturgis, as well as dozens of other goods and services that save the city money, so the city does not have to then underwrite these additional expenses.” Mayor Mark Carstensen feels that the community of Sturgis is extremely fortunate to have corporate partners like Harley-Davidson Motor Company, AMSOIL, Rosenbauer Fighting Technology, BlackHillsVacations.com, Budweiser, Coca-Cola, Ford, GEICO, Jack Daniel's, Knology, Law Tigers, Medtec, FF Journal, Sons of Anarchy, South Dakota Department of Tourism, South Dakota Pork Producers Council, Black Hills Power Corporation, Tom’s T’s and DA BUS. “We need to not only recognize the contributions made by our Sturgis Motorcycle Rally sponsors, but more importantly publicly and sincerely thank them,” Carstensen stated. “These are very important, generous gestures.”
