17th Annual Ride for the Homeless

May 31, 2006
There is nothing like a crisp morning ride to make you feel alive. It gets even better when the ride is going to help a one great organization. Stephanie and I were lucky enough to be allowed to cover this year’s 17th Annual Bikers With a Mission, Run For The Homeless held Sunday, May 7. I am not going to rehash the ride history as Cycle Connections has covered this ride for several years. Just use the magazine archives to find out the beginnings of this great event or go to www.bikerswithamission.org. After meeting Shark and Donna for breakfast in…

Adrenaline Extreme Combat’s Fight for the Kids – June 24, 2006

May 31, 2006
On Saturday, June 24, several local forces are joining together to sponsor one of the biggest motorcycle-related events of this riding season. Chad Osborne of Adrenaline Extreme Combat and Josh Baker, sales manager at Jack Miller American Thunder V-Twin, envisioned combining the draw of an Extreme Fight with a charity ride that would benefit a well-deserved and much-needed charity— Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) KC Missouri Chapter . Cycle Connections is proud to be a co-sponsor of this event called Fight for the Kids, and we are glad to have the opportunity to assist in planning, organizing and participating to…

Lightning Strikes Family Fun Center - Trussville, Alabama

May 31, 2006
Friday night bike nights at Lightning Strikes Family Fun Center in Trussville, Alabama are awesome! Cycle Connections is very proud to be a sponsor of this bike night since its conception. It’s like our favorite child! Lightning Strikes has taken Bike Night out of the box and out of the building. It is the only bike night around that is outside with the bikes and with all the other essential necessities required for a good party. As soon as you hit the parking lot, they have a path for the bikes to take around to the back where we take…

Spring Thunder Beach Rally 2006 - Panama City Beach, Florida

May 31, 2006
The first weekend in May means it’s time for the Spring Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Beach, Florida. The weather was nice enough for riding when we started our journey down to the beach Thursday morning, but plagued with “bike gremlins” from the get-go. After getting fuel for the trip (just a few blocks from the house), our neighbors and Leigh’s friends he grew up with, Jerry and David Jones, headed back to the house to work on one of their bikes. Then about an hour or so out, Leigh and another of our friends, “Fuzzy,” had to make…

6th Annual Branson Motorcycle Rally

May 31, 2006
The 6th Annual Branson Motorcycle Rally had a new location this year. The Branson Inn off Highway 248 was the site for this year’s rally, held on May 18-21. The money raised by the registration and attendance of the rally is donated to many different charities, with the two main recipients being the Humane Society and the Special Olympics Missouri. Money is also donated to the following local bike clubs who in turn donate to other charities of their choice: Star Touring Branson Chapter 248Tri-Lakes Messengers Chapter for the Christian Motorcyclist AssociationFreedom of Road Riders Local 15Bikers Against Child Abuse…

Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show 2006 - Kansas City

May 31, 2006
This year’s Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show held at Bartle Hall in Kansas City on April 29 started much like last year’s did for Stephanie and me, and much earlier than it did for most of you. We began contacting this year’s master builders last winter scheduling interviews so we could provide the inside info on some of custom motorcycling’s biggest names. Our efforts paid off big just like last year as we have interviews to keep you coming back for several months. We arrived early on Friday before the show during setup to meet up with our buddy Jaxon Fyffe…

AMA Superbike Racing at Barber Motorsports – Birmingham, Alabama

May 31, 2006
AMA racing is back in Birmingham as Barber Motorsports kicks off their racing season with a bang! Barber’s is the second stop in the racing circuit. The track is 2.38 miles with 14 turns, and the guys will make 28 laps. The weather was absolutely beautiful, which made the weekend of riding and racing all the better. We start seeing the bikes filling up the hotels around Trussville as early as Wednesday and Thursday, especially when the weather is this conducive to riding. People come from all over the country, and for someone like me who likes to check out…

Kim & Cheryl Suter's Thank You Party

May 31, 2006
Once again Kim and Cheryl Suter pulled off a great event. Of course I am talking about the “Thank You” party held once again on the eve of the Easyriders V-Twin Invitational Bike Show. The festivities are held to thank KC Creations’ friends as well as to provide a low-pressure gathering for the builders and industry folks. Having been invited to this event last year, Stephanie and I were much more relaxed and were looking forward to the event with great anticipation. It’s not often one gets the chance to rub elbows with local celebrities and master bike builders all…

Bike Show at Yeager's and Flat Track Races at LA Raceway

May 31, 2006
For the past several years, I have spent a late-August Saturday (and sometimes Sunday as well) in Sedalia, Missouri, enjoying a bike show at Yeager Cycle Sales followed by A.M.A. Grand National flat track motorcycle races on the half-mile State Fair Speedway. I will not be doing that in 2006. Due to several years of bad luck with weather, race postponements, and the enormous expense involved in staging a Grand National race at that venue, the promoters, primarily Yeager’s and R.K. Stratman, reluctantly decided to scratch the 2006 race from the schedule. However, due to the love for the sport…

Project-Vostok – A Five-Week Motorcycle Trek Across Russia

May 31, 2006
Adventuresome is something that those of us who love to ride would claim is in our blood. Even those who choose to live their traveling time in cages (or cars) assert that they too are risk-taking thrill seekers. In either case, very few would even consider for the briefest moment the trip that two childhood and life-long friends are about to encounter. Douglas Robertson, a.k.a. Roma Dakota and Kevin Williams, a.k.a. Rider X grew up together in the Lee’s Summit suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Their risky and exploratory plan is a five-week trek on Soviet-made motorcycles, starting in mid…

What Memorial Day Means to Me

May 31, 2006
Memorial Day throughout my childhood always signaled the coming of summer and the end of school. Soon there would be days when I wouldn’t need to get up for school, times when I could play with friends, and vacations with my grandparents fishing in Minnesota. Memorial Day was a time for barbecues and an evening in the park playing with family and friends. I had no idea what the real meaning of the day was nor did I care. The men huddled around the grill cooking food for lunch and then would head off to talk about things kids wouldn’t…

Crisis – No Mercy

May 31, 2006
Hard Rock is a term loosely applied to a wide variety of music depending on the generation you grew up in. Rock Hard, on the other hand is associated with many things, the least of which is music. For Crisis, the three piece power trio from Olathe, Rock Hard is a fitting principle to their sound. Their debut album, “No Mercy,” released this spring, is a testament to that. In the song, Living Contradiction, the lyrics say it all “the weapon of choice is volume!” If you’ve seen them live, you could not disagree. With metal in their blood, Crisis…

Steve “Bub” Ford – Prayers and Help Needed For a Fallen Brother

April 30, 2006
After not owning a motorcycle for about three decades, Steve “Bub” Ford bought a used Harley so he could go cruising with his friends and his son. With his wife on behind him he headed out on April 1 with nine other bikes for a get-together at the dealer’s place. No one knows why, but for some reason Bub didn’t make a curve in the road (there was no speeding or impaired judgment involved) and went down an embankment. His wife fell off the bike early in the plunge and suffered only minor injuries, but Bub wasn’t so lucky. He…

2nd Annual St. Jude Poker Run – Eatonton, Georgia

April 30, 2006
On April 15, 2006, in Eatonton, Georgia, the Oconee Chapter #400 of the Southern Cruisers Riding Club held its Second Annual Poker Run. The riders started coming in from as far away as Savannah, Loganville, and Macon, Georgia to raise money for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. St. Jude Children's Hospital is one of the largest childhood cancer research centers in the world for patients enrolled on a research study protocol. St. Jude opened back in 1962 in Memphis with the help of the entertainer Danny Thomas. ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) helps find different…

Greater Kansas City H.O.G. Assists Special Olympics

April 30, 2006
Every year, Special Olympics in the Kansas City Metro Area depends on numerous individual and group volunteers to assist with their Area Track and Field Meet. One group that never fails to participate is the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Harley Owners Group. For many years, members and guests of G.K.C. H.O.G. have enjoyed managing the men’s and boys’ 100-meter running and walking competitions. This year I had the honor of coordinating the H.O.G. volunteer recruiting, an easy task since so many are eager to participate. I drafted a newsletter article and spoke at a couple of the group’s monthly…

Milledgeville Thunder Rally – Milledgeville, Georgia

April 30, 2006
I came riding in at Thunder Rally in Milledgeville, Georgia on April 7, and found the place packed with bikers from Florida to Tennessee and South Carolina to Texas. Motorcyclists came to this little college town to join in the three-day party. I am always surprised at each event about the sheer number of bikers who come to Milledgeville each time. This year the bikers didn't wait for Saturday to come. Motorcyclists came in all day Friday until late Saturday afternoon. When I first walked into the vendor area, I met F. Draco from Meridian, Mississippi. I learned that he…

Fun Times at Gail's Harley-Davidson

April 30, 2006
There is always something fun going on at Gail’s Harley-Davidson in Grandview, Missouri. I recently attended two great events there within the span of three days. The first clue that Gail’s Spring Fashion Show, held on Thursday evening, March 30, would have a western theme was the mailed invitation. It was decorated with horseshoes and invited recipients to “… mosey on down..” to the dealership. The new Harley-Davidson motorcycles yielded their showroom space, at least for one evening, to a large stage. After enjoying beverages and h’ors douvres, those in attendance had the opportunity to see the latest in Harley…

Riders Harley-Davidson 30th Anniversary - Birmingham, Alabama

April 30, 2006
This year, Riders Harley-Davidson in Trussville, Alabama, turns 30! You have definitely come a long way baby! It’s hard to believe looking at them now that Riders was born from such humble beginnings in the basement of Bill Peek’s parents home in Oneonta, Alabama, where a family friend threw the name “Riders” at Bill when he told them he needed a name for his business so he could order parts. Prior to that, Bill and a friend of his would work on people's motorcycles. Back then, there weren’t a lot of choices to get work done or get parts for…
