Cycle Connections People's Choice Ride-In Bike Show at KCIR

June 30, 2006
Sunday, June 25, 2006 was the date and the Kansas City International Raceway (KCIR) was the location for the Cycle Connections Bike Show, held in conjunction with the Soul Brothers 4th Annual Drag Race. Darwin Barnett of the Soul Brothers Drag Racing Team contacted Dave Miller and I and asked if we would be interested in sponsoring this year’s bike show at his annual drag race. Although we were already committed to covering several other events that weekend we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. We had bike show classes for Custom/Radical, American Cruiser, Metric Cruiser, Sportbike, Antique and Best in Show.…

2006 Land of OZ Rally - La Cygne, Kansas

June 30, 2006
A few weeks ago, I woke up way too early on a Saturday morning. Recognizing that 'early’ is a relative term, to me it means at least an hour or so before the sun rises. After living through a brutal week of work, and painfully aware that I was not going back to sleep, I decided that the best therapy for me would be to go for a ride into the country to watch the sun come up. On this occasion, I chose to head south and ended up near the La Cygne electrical generating station, about an hour from…

All Harley Drag Races - Commerce, Georgia

June 30, 2006
Memorial Day weekend had a great deal of motorcycle-related events to choose from, but Leigh and I decided on an all-Harley weekend with the Stone Mountain Harley-Davidson Southern National all Harley Drags, at the Atlanta Dragway presented by Drag Specialties. We had bike night at Lightning Strikes Friday night, which Cycle Connections helps sponsor, so we got up early Saturday morning and drove the three hours or so to the track. We stayed at the Howard Johnson again this year; they allow your four-legged family members to stay as well. There are several hotels right there together to choose from,…

13th Annual Honda Hoot Motorcycle Rally – Knoxville, Tennessee

June 30, 2006
Having now experienced a Honda Hoot, this “Hooter” now is a bit wiser. The 13th Annual Honda Hoot Motorcycle Rally, which attracts hundreds of vendors and thousands of motorcycle riders — mostly Honda riders, of course — took place June 20-24 in Knoxville, Tennessee. And since mid-April, plans had been underway for the “Three Amigos” to “saddle up” and head out on the highway for a 10-day motorcycle adventure via Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina and then arriving in Knoxville the first day of the Hoot. Comprising the group was Kurt Hoffman, Gardner, Kansas, on his Honda…

Indian Nations Ride

June 30, 2006
Have you ever just wanted to strike out on a ride to somewhere looking for the adventure? Well, one day that very thought came to me while driving home from vacation in my cage from Texas through Oklahoma where I was born and back home to Lee’s Summit. While looking at the land all around me, my thoughts traveled back in time as to how hard it must have been to travel across country like the Indians, pioneers and cowboys where the only modes of travel were horseback and wagons or walking. That's when I began to think of a…

The Silver Lining

June 30, 2006
The bright orange ball was fighting its way through the early morning mist as I twisted the throttle and climbed out of the low valley. Although I appreciated the beauty, I didn’t ignore the warning that it promised; yet another scorching day in Texas. I figured I would catch up on a couple of hours of work before I rode to Ft. Worth to meet up with the Patriot Guard Riders and attend a memorial service for yet another of our fallen heroes. Not at all a pleasant way to spend a Saturday morning, but it does in its own…

The Moving Wall

June 30, 2006
The clocked screamed and the digital reading blinked 0400. It was time to wake up my houseguest Andy and head out to meet the wall. Andy Barksdale has been a friend of my wife and me since we met several years ago. Andy had just purchased a 2006 Street Glide and was anxious to take a trip. Coincidence or destiny, it just so happened that the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Moving Wall was passing close enough that we could make it to help provide an escort. We rode the 90 minutes between my house and Texas Motor Speedway in the early…

Spike’s 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Run

May 31, 2006
Saturday May 6 was cool and overcast and did not look like a great day for the 2nd Annual Spike’s Breast Cancer Run. It definitely was not a day for the fair weather riders. Although there was some concern early on about how many riders would show up, Anita Shaw, aka Spike, was not concerned that morning; her attitude was that the real bikers would be there, and she was right. The riders continued to arrive at the Brickyard in Olathe for the noon departure until the heat and roar of the cycles was over 300 strong. Spike’s Breast Cancer…

17th Annual Ride for the Homeless

May 31, 2006
There is nothing like a crisp morning ride to make you feel alive. It gets even better when the ride is going to help a one great organization. Stephanie and I were lucky enough to be allowed to cover this year’s 17th Annual Bikers With a Mission, Run For The Homeless held Sunday, May 7. I am not going to rehash the ride history as Cycle Connections has covered this ride for several years. Just use the magazine archives to find out the beginnings of this great event or go to www.bikerswithamission.org. After meeting Shark and Donna for breakfast in…

Adrenaline Extreme Combat’s Fight for the Kids – June 24, 2006

May 31, 2006
On Saturday, June 24, several local forces are joining together to sponsor one of the biggest motorcycle-related events of this riding season. Chad Osborne of Adrenaline Extreme Combat and Josh Baker, sales manager at Jack Miller American Thunder V-Twin, envisioned combining the draw of an Extreme Fight with a charity ride that would benefit a well-deserved and much-needed charity— Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) KC Missouri Chapter . Cycle Connections is proud to be a co-sponsor of this event called Fight for the Kids, and we are glad to have the opportunity to assist in planning, organizing and participating to…

Lightning Strikes Family Fun Center - Trussville, Alabama

May 31, 2006
Friday night bike nights at Lightning Strikes Family Fun Center in Trussville, Alabama are awesome! Cycle Connections is very proud to be a sponsor of this bike night since its conception. It’s like our favorite child! Lightning Strikes has taken Bike Night out of the box and out of the building. It is the only bike night around that is outside with the bikes and with all the other essential necessities required for a good party. As soon as you hit the parking lot, they have a path for the bikes to take around to the back where we take…

Spring Thunder Beach Rally 2006 - Panama City Beach, Florida

May 31, 2006
The first weekend in May means it’s time for the Spring Thunder Beach Rally in Panama City Beach, Florida. The weather was nice enough for riding when we started our journey down to the beach Thursday morning, but plagued with “bike gremlins” from the get-go. After getting fuel for the trip (just a few blocks from the house), our neighbors and Leigh’s friends he grew up with, Jerry and David Jones, headed back to the house to work on one of their bikes. Then about an hour or so out, Leigh and another of our friends, “Fuzzy,” had to make…

6th Annual Branson Motorcycle Rally

May 31, 2006
The 6th Annual Branson Motorcycle Rally had a new location this year. The Branson Inn off Highway 248 was the site for this year’s rally, held on May 18-21. The money raised by the registration and attendance of the rally is donated to many different charities, with the two main recipients being the Humane Society and the Special Olympics Missouri. Money is also donated to the following local bike clubs who in turn donate to other charities of their choice: Star Touring Branson Chapter 248Tri-Lakes Messengers Chapter for the Christian Motorcyclist AssociationFreedom of Road Riders Local 15Bikers Against Child Abuse…

Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show 2006 - Kansas City

May 31, 2006
This year’s Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show held at Bartle Hall in Kansas City on April 29 started much like last year’s did for Stephanie and me, and much earlier than it did for most of you. We began contacting this year’s master builders last winter scheduling interviews so we could provide the inside info on some of custom motorcycling’s biggest names. Our efforts paid off big just like last year as we have interviews to keep you coming back for several months. We arrived early on Friday before the show during setup to meet up with our buddy Jaxon Fyffe…

AMA Superbike Racing at Barber Motorsports – Birmingham, Alabama

May 31, 2006
AMA racing is back in Birmingham as Barber Motorsports kicks off their racing season with a bang! Barber’s is the second stop in the racing circuit. The track is 2.38 miles with 14 turns, and the guys will make 28 laps. The weather was absolutely beautiful, which made the weekend of riding and racing all the better. We start seeing the bikes filling up the hotels around Trussville as early as Wednesday and Thursday, especially when the weather is this conducive to riding. People come from all over the country, and for someone like me who likes to check out…

Kim & Cheryl Suter's Thank You Party

May 31, 2006
Once again Kim and Cheryl Suter pulled off a great event. Of course I am talking about the “Thank You” party held once again on the eve of the Easyriders V-Twin Invitational Bike Show. The festivities are held to thank KC Creations’ friends as well as to provide a low-pressure gathering for the builders and industry folks. Having been invited to this event last year, Stephanie and I were much more relaxed and were looking forward to the event with great anticipation. It’s not often one gets the chance to rub elbows with local celebrities and master bike builders all…

Bike Show at Yeager's and Flat Track Races at LA Raceway

May 31, 2006
For the past several years, I have spent a late-August Saturday (and sometimes Sunday as well) in Sedalia, Missouri, enjoying a bike show at Yeager Cycle Sales followed by A.M.A. Grand National flat track motorcycle races on the half-mile State Fair Speedway. I will not be doing that in 2006. Due to several years of bad luck with weather, race postponements, and the enormous expense involved in staging a Grand National race at that venue, the promoters, primarily Yeager’s and R.K. Stratman, reluctantly decided to scratch the 2006 race from the schedule. However, due to the love for the sport…

Project-Vostok – A Five-Week Motorcycle Trek Across Russia

May 31, 2006
Adventuresome is something that those of us who love to ride would claim is in our blood. Even those who choose to live their traveling time in cages (or cars) assert that they too are risk-taking thrill seekers. In either case, very few would even consider for the briefest moment the trip that two childhood and life-long friends are about to encounter. Douglas Robertson, a.k.a. Roma Dakota and Kevin Williams, a.k.a. Rider X grew up together in the Lee’s Summit suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Their risky and exploratory plan is a five-week trek on Soviet-made motorcycles, starting in mid…
