Touring Northern Arizona

December 31, 2003
On a recent trip to Phoenix for a wedding, Ramona and I decided to extend our trip and do a Fly and Ride. We picked up a 2003 Heritage at Chosa's Harley-Davidson in Mesa just east of Phoenix. We took AZ 87 north toward Payson and Winslow. At the suggestion of a fellow Harley rider we talked with at a rest stop, we visited a unique place just north of Payson which is the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park. If you have ever been to the Natural Bridge in Virginia then imagine putting two or three inside this natural bridge…

TIME Person of the Year for 2003: The American Soldier

December 31, 2003
United States fighters swept across Iraq and conquered it in 21 days. They stand guard on streets potholed with skepticism and animosity. They caught Saddam Hussein. They are the face of America, its might and goodwill, in a region unfamiliar with democracy. These are just a few lines out of TIME magazine; an essay written by Nancy Gibbs. TIME magazine has nominated the Soldier, as Person of the Year, a recognition not seen since 1950. It is quite an honor, and duly so, that our American fighting men and women are proudly singled out within our nation. These soldiers, our…

Caring for Kansas City for the Holidays

November 30, 2003
During the holidays, our calendars are filled with events promising an unforgettable season. But for some, this is not the case. Thankfully, many people open their hearts to those less fortunate and give generously at this time of the year. When donating clothing and/or food for needy families, remember their pets need help too. If we can help them take care of their pets, fewer pets will be surrendered and end up in shelters. If you, your family, co-workers or riding club are interested in providing life’s most basic joys within your community, here are some ways to help:The March…

Harley Fashion Show

November 30, 2003
On Thursday evening, November 20th, the Ladies of Harley and Gail’s Harley-Davidson hosted a winter fashion show featuring Harley apparel for all ages. Gail graciously opened her business and clothing line to help make this a success. The Ladies of Harley put in a lot of time and flair to please the attendees. The models appeared a bit nervous, but bravely and eloquently walked the runway amid applause, cameras flashing, and encouraging comments from family and friends. Leather was the prominent show theme, but warm slippers, robes and jaunty hats were also featured. This event was guaranteed to generate many…

Christmas at War

November 30, 2003
The images of Christmas we are most familiar with are Santa Claus, Christmas trees, mistletoe and gifts, but for many military men and women, Christmas is different. Christmas brings no relief to the cold, heat, misery, fear, danger and loneliness to a service member’s life away from home. This Christmas, many of our American military will find themselves celebrating under fire and far away from their loved ones. Typically, the holiday season is for generosity to our families and to those in need, but there's a third category we often neglect. That person is a soldier, sailor, airman or a…

4th Annual Bikes, Blues & BBQ Motorcycle Rally

November 1, 2003
Fayetteville, Arkansas is home to the fastest growing motorcycle rally in the country. In just four short years, the Bikes, Blues & BBQ Motorcycle Rally has grown to over 125,000 attendees, which more than doubles last year’s attendance of 50,000. Proceeds from the event benefits the Washington County’s Council on Aging Meals-on-Wheels program, which serves over 600 meals to the elderly in northwest Arkansas every day. Why is Bikes, Blues and BBQ such a popular event, you might ask? That’s exactly what we were wondering, so we decided to ride on down and find out for ourselves. On Thursday morning, October…

Kobi's Club and Deli

October 31, 2003
All week long, I’d been looking forward to Tuesday evening October 7th because I was planning on riding over to Kobi’s Club & Deli in Bonner Springs, Kansas for their weekly bike night. I’d been to Kobi’s before on a poker run, but tonight I was headed there to do a bike night review for our magazine. I figured if I was lucky, I could do a quick interview with the owner, chat with a few fellow riders and take a couple photos before sitting back and relaxing the rest of the evening. It was cold and damp evening as…

4th Annual Ms. Bikes, Blues & BBQ

October 31, 2003
On Saturday evening, October 4, 2003, eight vivacious, beautiful women took the stage for the 4th Annual Ms. Bikes, Blues & BBQ finals competition in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Preliminaries had taken place August 23rd through October 3rd at various local clubs, with Powerhouse Seafood hosting the semifinals. Knight Times Tattoos was the exclusive sponsor of this year's contest, and I also spoke with Nat Bothwell of Arkansas National Bank and one of the judges for the event. Nat stated "We’re sure it will get bigger every year, and I just want to say what an outstanding job the rally directors have…

6th Annual Fall Night Train Run

October 31, 2003
As the fall days grow cooler & the foliage turns into vibrant colors, motorcycles are gearing towards retirement for the winter months. Not for Michael Bergen, his season is just beginning. On Saturday, October 18th, Michael Bergen’s Hands to Hearts Night Train Run was held, rain or shine. I know this to be true as I have brushed ice off my seat a time or two participating in his events. But no one seems to mind the cold temperatures since they know a smile and a dream will come true for many disadvantaged children this Christmas, as it has for…

Camp Rulo River Club

October 31, 2003
If you’re looking for a great scenic ride, some of the best catfish around, and all within a couple hour ride of Kansas City, you’re in luck! Situated on the banks of the Missouri River, in Rulo, Nebraska, the Camp Rulo River Club, better know as Camp Rulo, offers some great down home cooking. Owners Jim and Lois Lunsford also serve chicken, steak and other excellent menu items, but my favorite is still the catfish. Just give me a plate for the salad bar, a cold beer and some tarter sauce, and I’m ready to do some serious eating while…

What's so Important about Emporia, Kansas in November?

October 31, 2003
At first thought, November is a month that seems to be just so-so to many Americans across the United States. But once you start thinking about all the things that occur in this month, it is quite an eventful time. It delivers the ever changing weather, shifting rapidly between fall and winter. It brings down the last of the falling colorful leaves that many enjoy, and brings on the scorn of those who must rake them up. Thanksgiving is celebrated with the gathering of family, friends and food, and there is one other important event that is often overlooked or…

23rd Annual Freedom Ride for MDA

October 30, 2003
The forecast for Saturday, October 11th was cloudy and cool with a chance of rain. But that didn’t stop about 120 riders from participating in the 23rd annual Freedom Ride for MDA. The ride raises money to help MDA conquer neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans.Riders could begin the ride at either Worth Harley-Davidson North or Blue Springs Harley-Davidson. We left from the Blue Springs store which led us up 7 Highway to 24 Highway and over to 224 past Wellington and into Richmond off 13 Highway. This was the first stop for a dice roll and…

Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary Celebration

October 14, 2003
On Sunday, August 31, 2003, Harley-Davidson threw the ultimate birthday bash to celebrate their 100 year anniversary, and we were there to join in the celebration! The Party, as it was called, took place in Milwaukee’s Veterans Park on the shores of Lake Michigan, and was the grand finale of everything that lead up to this event – The Open Road Tour, the Ride Home, and the four-day celebration. On Wednesday morning, August 27th, our road trip to Milwaukee began at the intersection of Hwy. 291 and Hwy. 24 in Independence, Missouri, where my girlfriend, Margaret, and I met up…

Downtown Kansas City Throws A Biker Bash!

September 28, 2003
Thunder in the Heartland is what they called it, and that’s exactly what was heard in downtown Kansas City as thousands of bikers converged on Union Station and the Liberty Memorial. Kansas City was chosen as one of the rendezvous points for riders on the southwest leg of the “Ride Home” tour. Riders had left Oklahoma City on Sunday morning, August 24th, and arrived throughout the day to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Harley-Davidson, Kansas City style.Main Street was blocked off from 20th to 27th and was turned into one giant lot for motorcycle parking. As we walked up…
