Fat Pat's Bike Night - Trussville, Alabama

July 31, 2005
Fat Pat’s in Trussville Alabama, owned by Patrick Dunn and located off Chalkville Mt. Road behind the Chevron (formerly On Tap), started their first-ever bike night, Wednesday, June 22. Leigh and I were proud to represent Cycle Connections and sponsor Pat’s first bike night. Tim Peek and Linda from Riders Harley-Davidson in Trussville most generously donated T-shirts, hats, coozies, and pens to our door prizes. Also Jeff and Sherri from Bessie’s Cycle Barn donated several (very useful) gift certificates. Neal Lacy from Bogart’s Motor Sports donated a stack of Triumph T-Shirts. For the Wednesday night bike nights, Patrick has taken…

Oklahoma Bike Week at Sparks America

July 31, 2005
Oklahoma Bike Week at the Sparks America Campground is promoted as “One Bad Ass Bike Run.” It’s one case of truth in advertising. This year’s event took place from June 17 through 26. Admission was $100 for a ten-day pass, $50 for five days, and $15 for single day passes, and it was worth every penny. Bikers came from all over the country, and attendance increased to around 10,000. I made the 350-mile ride from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, to Sparks America, located about 60 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, on Wednesday, June 22. Clear skies and a blazing sun mercifully…

N.F.T.R.A. Motorcycle Races at Lakeside Speedway

July 31, 2005
The 3/8-mile oval at Lakeside Speedway is Kansas City’s center for exciting dirt track racing. On Friday nights throughout the racing season, racecars compete in Modified, Grand National, and Factory Stock classes at the track located a few miles north of the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas. On July 9 and again on July 23, after an absence of more than 25 years, motorcycle racing returned to Lakeside. These events were sanctioned by the National Flat Track Racing Association, based in Wichita, Kansas. According to Roger Attebury, N.F.T.R.A. President, this series often serves as a stepping stone for young…

AMRA All Harley Drags – Bowling Green, Kentucky

July 31, 2005
There’s nothing like the smell of nitro Harleys in the morning! On June 23-26, 2005, Beach Bend Raceway hosted the American Motorcycle Racing Association (AMRA) All Harley Drags with all the hoopla. For the past few years my family and I have stopped there for several different races, however this was my first, but hopefully not my last time to see the all Harley drags. Beach Bend is not only a drag strip, but is also an amusement park, water park and camp ground. The bleachers are conveniently covered so you can sit in the shade and there are a…

KC Creations 10th Anniversary Party

July 31, 2005
Is it hotter in the summer in the city or colder in the winter in the country? You are probably asking yourself where the hell is he going with this. Read on, o’ faithful reader and you will understand. The above question is just a little bit of redneck witticism from my home town. The question is meant to stymie you, as there is no correct answer. I believed this to be true until June 25, 2005. I now know it is much hotter in the summer in the city. Stephanie and I were on hand to cover KC Creations…

KC Riverfest Car and Motorcycle Show

July 31, 2005
After living in the Kansas City metro for almost 20 years, I am somewhat ashamed to admit I had never visited the Berkley Riverfront Park before July 2 of this year. It has truly been my loss to delay a visit. Stephanie and I decided to ride the scooter down and check out some of the Kansas City Riverfest activities held July 2-3 in celebration of Independence weekend. Alright, to be honest, all I really went for was the Kansas City Riverfest Car and Motorcycle show, and I am damn glad I did. The weather was perfect for the event…

Soul Brothers 3rd Annual Drag Race at KCIR

July 31, 2005
After last year spending two full days of breathing the avgas and the alcohol-based fuel, I was very eager to get back down to KCIR Speedway for the 3rd Annual Soul Brothers Drag Racing Series. I woke up to an 80-degree day with 75 percent humidity. Wow! Not a great start for racing, but I went along for the complete ride this year. I met up with Darwin Barnett and his lovely wife Mary at the motor home. I knew this would be a great base-camp to set up my laptop for the picture downloads. I have never been so…

St. Joe Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Stunt Show & Cook-Out Party

July 31, 2005
On Saturday, July 9, 2005, St. Joe Harley-Davidson sponsored a motorcycle stunt show and cookout party, which attracted hundreds of riders from St. Joseph, Kansas City, Topeka and everywhere in between. When the McCreary’s throw on a party, everyone comes! Along with great food, the local band Swift Kik was cranking out some great music and cheerleaders from several local high schools got the crowd going by conducting a live dancing fashion show on stage to showcase all the new Harley-Davidson Motorclothes. The motorcycle stunt team, Ill Conduct, from Nashville, Tennessee performed at various times throughout the day and was…

Hog Wild at Riders Harley-Davidson

July 31, 2005
On Saturday, July 9, Riders Harley-Davidson in conjunction with the Birmingham H.O.G. chapter threw an all day HOG WILD bash! The Birmingham H.O.G. chapter started back in February selling $50 raffle tickets for a chance at owning a brand new black 2005 Heritage Softail Classic. The goal was to sell 600 tickets, which of course they did! Who wouldn’t give $50 toward the possibility of driving home a brand new Harley! Early in the day Saturday, there was a pancake breakfast and a bike wash, from which the Birmingham H.O.G. raised around $1,000 to donate to the Children’s Hospital. Riders…

Escorting The Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall

July 31, 2005
Often as a photojournalist, we are asked to participate in events that we may not necessarily be excited about. Recognizing that it is our responsibility to do so, we show up, complete our assignment then move along. On occasion, we have the opportunity to be a part of something much bigger than the particular experience, something that touches us deeply. A few months ago, a co-worker had recommended that Cycle Connections promote and participate in the escort ride for the Dignity ®Memorial Vietnam Wall Experience. Now, having ridden with the escort and after spending time with the wall, I can…

3rd Annual Ride for Ryan

June 30, 2005
The Ride for Ryan is a memorial ride for Ryan Consolver of Union Star, Missouri, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident on August 11, 2002, at the age of 24. Held each year in St. Joseph, Missouri at the time of Ryan’s birthday, the event provides scholarship funds for young people who aspire to careers in the construction industry. I became aware of the ride in March while covering Kansas City’s World of Wheels Show where Ryan’s family had entered his beautifully customized Fat Boy and truck. Ryan’s mom, Janis, told me his story, and I was moved to…

13th Annual Putt for Mutts

June 30, 2005
Another successful Putt for Mutts ride is history, and Wayside Waifs Humane Society raised more than $28,000 thanks to more than 700 generous motorcyclists who participated. Wayside Waifs, Inc. is an independent, not-for-profit animal shelter that takes in nearly 12,000 pets annually. This organization depends solely on donations for support. The event took place on May 21, and the weather couldn’t have been better. Registration began at 9 a.m. at Gail’s Harley-Davidson in Grandview, Missouri. For a $20 donation, riders received dice run sheets, ride pins, goodie bags, and a meal. For an additional $15, a commemorative T-shirt was included.…

Stables Bar & Grill – Kearney, Missouri

June 30, 2005
On Thursday evening, June 16, J.O., one of my partners in crime and I decided to take the backroads from Blue Springs to Stables Bar & Grill in Kearney for their Thursday night bike night and to help at the pre-registration signup booth for the Ride the Organ Trail benefit ride we are helping to sponsor for a good friend of ours who is having a kidney transplant. When we arrived, the parking lot was packed and a band was cranking out some great blues in a corner of the parking lot next to the building. After parking the bikes,…

2nd Annual Blackhawk Motorcycle Rally

June 30, 2005
There’s no question the 2nd Annual Blackhawk Motorcycle Rally 2005 in Spring Hill, Kansas on June 18 was a success. Word of mouth about a fun event spreads the news quickly. The number of motorcycles coming into Spring Hill and the number of bikes entered in the show more than doubled. The Spring Hill Ruritans’ High School Scholarship Foundation nearly doubled the amount it made from last year. Spring Hill Scouts and the high school’s After Prom organizations also benefited. Vendors were happy, and the Spring Hill community received a vast amount of radio coverage as a result of the…

Magna Riders Association Visits Eureka Springs, Arkansas

June 30, 2005
Harley riders have the H.O.G. BMW riders have their own clubs and rallies. So do people who ride Honda Goldwings, or Victory Cycles, and even Indians. Heck, even people who ride vintage motorcycles have their own organizations. But a group just for Honda Magna motorcycles? The Magna, that sleek, four-cylinder piece of machinery that’s at its best cruising along the highway between 70 and 80 mph, is, to say the least, in a class by itself. While out on the road or at poker runs or other events, you may see a Magna or two among the other hundreds of…

Sizzler 2005 Motorcycle Rally in Warsaw, Missouri

June 30, 2005
As a favor to my buddy Mike, Editor of Cycle Connections, I decided to finally write an article for the magazine. I guess what finally got me off my butt to send one in was when Mike told me he didn’t have anyone available to cover the Sizzler held down in Warsaw, Missouri this year. I just couldn’t let the readers who were unable to attend the event not hear about this rally; it’s too fine a time. The Sizzler is held each year in June at the Never Mind Campground at the junction of Highway 65 South and 7…

AHDRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Georgia

June 30, 2005
WOW! And what a rush! Memorial Day weekend we went to the All Harley Drag Race at theAHDRA Southern Nationals in Commerce, Georgia, and my eardrums vibrated fordays afterward! We contacted Lisa Cranfill who handles the press relations for theAHDRA to request access to the race. We thought it would make a nice storywith some really cool pictures to share. Lisa couldn't have been more helpful. Wehad media packets waiting for us when we got there that were filled witha lot of useful information on the AHDRA. We headed for Georgia early Saturday to stay at the Howard Johnson'sin Commerce,…

Alabama State H.O.G. Rally

June 30, 2005
The Alabama State H.O.G. Rally was held in Pelham this year. It has been five years since it was held in the Birmingham area, and this rally covered a lot of ground. It started Thursday night in Trussville at Riders Harley-Davidson with a kick-off party where the Buicks were playing, hamburgers and hot dogs were grilling, and the store was staying open late. Even though it was kind of a 'crappy' night weather-wise, there was still a large turnout. We stayed for awhile then decided to go see what they were doing across town at the Heart of Dixie Harley-Davidson…

Blue Knights Alabama Chapter VI - Troop 2005 Ride

June 30, 2005
On Saturday, May 21, the Blue Knights Alabama Chapter VI hosted a Troop 2005 Ride to support our troops in Iraq. Mother Nature was nice enough to donate a beautiful day for the ride. Registration started at 10 a.m. with the ride-out scheduled for 1 p.m. departing from four different locations, Mt. Cheaha Harley-Davidson, Springville National Guard Armory, Alexander City National Guard Armory and Pelham's Heart of Dixie Harley-Davidson. The ride ended at 29 Dreams Motorcycle Resort in Vandiver. There were a lot of door prizes given away, T-shirts, hats, tool kits, knives, and a Jeff Gordon shirt I wanted!…

Kansas City BMW Club - 26th Annual Land of Oz Rally

June 30, 2005
No matter the best laid plans, you just can’t plan out the weather. And although severe storms, dramatic lightning, and heavy rains pounded La Cygne, Kansas, and Linn County Park during the early morning and late-night hours June 3-4-5, more than 100 die-hard BMW riders took part in the Kansas City BMW Club’s 26th Annual Land of Oz Rally. “I think a lot of people were looking at the weather radar and wondering if they should come or not,” said club member and nationally known rider Voni Glaves, Lawrence, Kansas. “We (Voni and her husband Paul) came down today (Saturday)…
