Great American Motorcycle Show - Atlanta, Georgia

March 31, 2006
On Sunday, February 12, I made my way to the North Atlanta Trade Center. This was one of those days it was snowing with the sun shining. Still, it wasn't cold enough for the snow to stick to the ground. I was hoping it would warm up in Atlanta, but I was wrong. I had just returned from Charlotte, North Carolina where I attended the Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show. The weather was colder and wetter in North Carolina. This is one of the events in the state of Georgia where you can meet most all of the local bike shop…

JB Walker and the Cheap Whiskey Band

March 31, 2006
JB Walker and the Cheap Whiskey Band is an Atlanta, Georgia-based band. This biker band was started back in 1985. This longtime biker band will celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2006. I have been listening to JB's music for the last five or six years. I have always liked to work the rallies or bike shows where he is appearing. For me, this is one of the must-see bands on my list. David Allan Coe is another singer who I like to hear, and I always thought his music had a great influence on JB's work. You can hear The…

25th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle Show – Minneapolis, Minnesota

February 28, 2006
There are a few signs of spring and none more exciting than the beginning of the motorcycle show season. I had yet another chance to attend the 25th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle show in Minneapolis, and believe me, the excitement for spring and the riding season has peaked. Each year this show gets a little larger, which means more and more bikes and accessories to drool over. For those who have not had an opportunity to get to this event, there are 13 shows presented throughout the country. It gives attendees an up-close look at hundreds of the latest…

35th Annual O’Reilly World of Wheels-Birmingham, Alabama

February 28, 2006
The 35th annual O’Reilly World of Wheels rolled into Birmingham, February 10-12, which meant that it was time for everyone to get their “bling” on their bikes for the 2006 riding season. The World of Wheels custom auto show is the largest indoor car show in Birmingham. It is a chance for everyone to show off their beautiful hard work that many have spent years perfecting, and a lot of them are set up in very elaborately done displays that also took a lot of time and money to put together. We not only have a lot of exhibitors from…

Chicago Supercycle Show & Parts Expo

February 28, 2006
The Chicago Supercycle Show & Parts Expo got started Saturday, February 4, 2006, with the early birds, as usual, trying to get the proverbial cycle part worm. The early birds pay an extra $5 to get the chance to find the part they are looking for before the masses of fellow cycle parts shoppers descend like vultures on a carcass. The Supercycle Show has always been about finding scooter parts, both new and used, as well as the hard-to-find, old, one-of-a-kind part needed to finish that custom bike. This show has grown over the years and has become a two-day…

Cycles n More Bike Show – Kansas City

February 28, 2006
Well, I worried for nothing. Getting ready for the Kansas City Cycles n More Bike Show, I wondered if bike shows on consecutive weekends would hurt attendance. From what I saw while I was there, attendance was just fine. I really enjoy this show yearly. The diversity of the bikes present is great—metrics, dirt bikes, scooters, European and of course plenty of American V-Twins provide a great mix. The American Royal Governors’ Exposition Building provides plenty of space for not only some really great displays but also some cool demonstrations by members of Team Extreme. This year’s show included talented…

Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show Tour, Charlotte, North Carolina

February 28, 2006
In Charlotte, North Carolina on February 11, 2006, the Easyriders V-Twin Bike Show Tour came to the Queen City on a very cold day. It was as cold as six feet up a well digger's behind. The rain started coming down around 4 o'clock in the morning. When I arrived at the convention center, it was still raining and cold. It sure felt good to go inside the warm convention center. The only motorcycles that I saw that day were inside of Charlotte Convention Center. Everyone was talking about when the bike show comes to Charlotte it usually snows. For…

Team Extreme at Cycles n More Bike Show

February 28, 2006
On of the really cool features of the Cycles n More Bike Show is the inclusion of stunt performances by members of the Stunt Tours Network. During this year’s show, trials rider Jess Kempkes rode his trials bike over a complex and challenging obstacle course, and brothers Erwin and Melvin Urias performed a difficult series of loops and cris-crosses inside a motosphere know as the Globe of Death. Jess demonstrated delicate control and precision balance during his performance. In addition to negotiating the difficult obstacles, Jess did a series of wheelies, stoppies, and no-ramp jumps inside the tight confines of…

Veteran's Tribute Motorcycle

February 28, 2006
'Honoring the men and women who serve or have served our country' This motorcycle is dedicated to the individuals who have served or are serving in any of the branches of the United States Armed Forces and their families. The sacrifices made by those brave men and women - and their families - to keep our country free, and make it possible for us to enjoy the privileges of living in the greatest nation on earth. The concept for this motorcycle was conceived by Gary and Brenda Towers of Granbury, Texas. It began as a personal dream for Gary whose father;…

Trampled Under Foot

February 28, 2006
“My appeal is my soul. My music is my soul, my voice is my soul and I am so grateful that anyone enjoys or relates to or even likes to watch it, as long as it is respected as my soul” ……Danielle Schnebelen, Trampled Under FootDanielle Schnebelen is one of Kansas City’s musical treasures. Stephanie and I first heard her a few summers ago performing in the band “Fresh Brew.” We were hooked immediately. Our Sunday plans for the rest of the summer included relaxing afternoons enjoying Danielle’s voice. Danielle has received every possible kind of compliment from local publications,…

2nd Annual Christian Bikers' Workshop-Cycle Disciples M/C

January 31, 2006
On Saturday morning, January 14, the Cycle Disciples of Kansas City sponsored their 2nd annual Christian Bikers’ Workshop. Again this year, chapter president Teddy Bitner, a.k.a. the Colonel, extended an invitation to Cycle Connections to cover the event. In addition, he requested that someone from the magazine staff make a presentation on the role of the motorcycle media. Public speaking is not my area of expertise, but I had enjoyed the previous year’s workshop and wanted to do my part to contribute to the success of this year’s event, so I accepted the assignment. The workshop was held in a…

25th Annual Cycle World International Motorcycle Show - Washington, DC

January 31, 2006
Prologue DC is one of the most exciting places in the world to own a two-wheeled vehicle. It’s said that “half the drivers are lost and confused, another 25 percent are diplomats (“their last ride was a camel...”) and the rest are congressmen under indictment!” This is an exciting scenario so have fun but pay attention… those cages will kill you and they won’t even notice… and they won’t be charged because they have “diplomatic immunity.” On the upside, this mix of maniacs is bound to improve your riding skills. You are either good or you are history. Two wheelers…

Khrome Cowgirls 2nd Birthday Party

January 31, 2006
Sisterhood, commitment, loyalty, compassion, caring, strong leadership and organized. These are the words I heard over and over from members on Saturday, January 14 at theKhrome Cowgirls 2nd birthday party celebration. And what a celebration it was in attendance considering they started with less than 30 members and now are 89 strong. That speaks volumes for this group and its leadership.Word of mouth has been the biggest recruiting tool so far, and they look forward to adding even more members this year. As I roamed the crowd talking to various members, they all have stories about how they got involved with…

Polar Bear Ride with Greater Kansas City H.O.G.

January 31, 2006
The name Polar Bear Ride implies frigid, wintry weather conditions. Fortunately for Kansas City bikers, it was a misnomer again this year for the traditional January 1st ride hosted by the Greater Kansas City H.O.G. Chapter. As always, the event was open to all riders and all makes of motorcycles with the stipulation that a liability release be signed. The ride began at the Children's Fountain a few miles north of downtown Kansas City. After three years as Chapter Director, Pat Honn decided not to run for re-election, so his last official duty was to lead this ride. The turnout…

SE&TRA Hare Scramble – Washington, Georgia

January 31, 2006
Washington, Georgia, January 22, the South Eastern Enduro & Trail Riders Association (SE&TRA) was at Anoia Pass Motocross Park for their Hare Scramble race. Let me start off by saying, I have a newfound respect for people who race off-road! It's a sport that requires you and your bike to be in top physical condition! Saturday was the practice day. All the riders except for a few were slow to arrive Saturday due to the rain. Only a few riders were out for the practice session. I think most of the riders were waiting to see what the rain was…

Wide Open Bike Show - Kansas City

January 31, 2006
Kansas City's bike show season officially got under way on January 20 through 22, kicked off by the Wide Open Bike Show at 3-Trails Expo Center on Hillcrest Road north of Bannister Mall. The 90,000 square foot facility worked out well for Wide Open Magazine's first bike show in the Kansas City area. Show bikes and vendors were set up on both floors of the facility, and several bands performed on stage on the upper level throughout the weekend. Admission was $12 with discounts of $2 per ticket available via coupons that could be obtained at various area businesses. There…

Veteran Riders on the Move

January 31, 2006
Recently at a meeting of motorcycle enthusiasts, veterans were requested to stand and to be recognized. Scattered throughout the crowd was a large number of vets from periods spanning Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and others in between. As American flags were passed out to each of these, it became clear that the impact of veterans on the riding scene is huge. Rides honoring vets and put forth by vets are growing in number year after year and a quick look at the Internet will reveal many rides and events sponsored for and by the veterans of American military service. The…
