Tours & Trips

Written by  March 31, 2008

Spring is in the air, we just can’t quite smell it yet. Last month we had a few days of sunshine, blue skies, and warm temperatures. If you didn’t pull your bike out of the garage, dust it off, air up the tires, and take it for a ride…well you missed out! We are now anxiously looking forward to more than just a few good riding days.

As we begin to rack up the miles over the next few months, there will be a lot more motorcycle riders and traffic. So, just a friendly heads up to be alert, careful, and to expect the unexpected. I still like the slogan we saw all through North Carolina; “Motorist Be Aware, Bikers Everywhere.”

Dear Goldie,
We would like to tour the Harley-Davidson plant when we come to Kansas City this summer. Can you give us some information on tours?

Dani and Denny
Clinton, Iowa

Hi Dani & Denny,
If you have never toured a Harley-Davidson plant you are in for a treat. Of course I’m a little partial to ours here in Kansas City, but I have heard the others are just as impressive.
The plant was built in 1998 and is 358,000 square foot and it is where the Sportster, Dyna, and VRSC are made from fabrication and finishing to final assembly.
The bad new is the Kansas City Tour Center is temporarily closed for several months as they are improving the experience. You will be amazed with the cleanliness of the plant and friendliness of tour guides and employees.

But, when it opens again for tours here is some general information you might want to know before going:

All tours are free and last approximately one hour
Monday thru Friday
Hours and tour schedules vary by locations and are subject to change. Visit www.h-d.com under the Company icon then Factory Tours section
Visitors 18 years and older must present a valid government-issued photo I.D.
Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times
Children under12 are welcome in the tour centers, but are not allowed on factory tours
Fully enclosed low-heeled shoes are required
Please notify the tour center in advance if you have a disability need and they will make every effort to accommodate you
Groups of 10 or more, reservations are recommended
June or July visits require a call in advance. Tours at all facilities are modified or not available during model year changeover
No cameras or recording devises in the plant, but are okay in the tour center
Bring money to spend; each tour center has a gift shop that sells Harley-Davidson accessories and souvenirs

Hope you have a fun visit to Kansas City, we offer many new additions for out of town visitors; the most popular being our fabulous Power & Light District where you will find offerings of entertainment, restaurants, sports bars, and the new Sprint Center.

I hope all of our readers are planning rally trips, weekend escapes, and fun runs for the next several months. Check out Cycle Connections events calendar for all the upcoming charity rides and “where it’s happening” with bike nights. Hope to see you around!

Until next month, have a safe and blessed Easter.
