Our January 2012 cover bike is owned by Ted Haase, and his 2006 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe was selected as one of the winning bikes at our Cover Bike Search at the The Bar in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

Ted is from Grain Valley, Missouri, and we had the opportunity to gather more information about him and his 2006 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe . We photographed cover model search winner Sarah, on his bike for this month’s cover.

CC: Ted, what is your occupation?
Ted: I retired in June 2011 after working at Hallmark Cards, Inc. for 42 years.

CC: Do you have hobbies other than motorcycling?
Ted: Yes, I also enjoy playing guitar. I also enjoy dancing to country western mostly, including the two-step, triple-step, waltz and even some line dances.

CC: Why do you ride?
Ted: To feel the freedom that riding gives you. Motorcyclists know why dogs stick their heads out the window! It’s a GREAT stress reliever!

CC: How long have you been riding?
Ted: Off and on for about 40 years.

CC: What was your first bike?
Ted: My first bike was a 2002 Harley-Davidson Softail Standard that I was in the process of customizing, when a driver in a cage ran a stop light, which ended that project pretty abruptly. I wasn’t hurt, but the bike was totaled.

CC: How many bikes have you owned?
Ted: Two.

CC: How many bikes do you currently own?
Ted: Just this one. My 2006 Harley-Davidson Softail Deluxe..

CC: What do you like most about your Deluxe?
Ted: The paint, and the fact that other than the paint job, I have done most of the work on it myself. All of the little personal touches I have done to it. I get teased quite a bit about being a fanatic on keeping it clean and polished. Most people have never seen it when it was dirty.

CC: What is your most memorable riding experience?
Ted: It’s all good! Still waiting for the MOST memorable.

CC: What is your least memorable riding experience?
Ted: It has to be last June, while on my way home from work, which coincidently happened to be my last day before retiring. A woman in a Volkswagen pulled out in front of me while she was TALKING ON HER CELL PHONE. I laid the bike down and slid into her. Fortunately, I wasn’t hurt, other than a little road rash. The bike, on the other hand, had about $8,700 worth of damage..

CC: To what motorcycle clubs or organizations do you belong?
Ted: I belong to Riders of American Roads (R.O.A.R.). We are not a club; but just a group of riding enthusiasts that love to ride.

CC: Which motorcycle rallies & events have you attended, and which is your favorite?
Ted: I have been to Sturgis once, Ralph Wayne’s Backyard Nationals, and Lee’s Summit Downtown Days. Gail’s Harley-Davidson has a ride-in bike show in that one, and last year I took the Best-In-Show award.

CC: What is your favorite bike night location?
Ted: R.O.A.R., the group I ride with, has their own bike night each Wednesday night at different locations..

CC: Do you prefer riding in a group or by yourself?
Ted: Both. It depends on my mood.

CC: Who are some of your closest riding buddies?
Ted: Most of the people associated with R.O.A.R. It is a great bunch of people.

CC: Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Ted: DO NOT TALK OR TEXT WHILE DRIVING. STAY OFF THOSE GOD DAMN CELL PHONES!!!!! Thank you.

CC: Thanks for the interview Ted, and thank you for letting us shoot your bike for this month’s cover.
