Need an escape from the pushing and shoving of holiday madness? Listed below are four towns less than two hours from Kansas City that enjoy Christmas the old-fashioned way.
- Parkville calls it Christmas on the River. Enjoy the spectacular scenery of the wooded hills and valleys overlooking the Missouri River. The highlight of the season is a celebration on December 5th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. featuring a 1,000 voice children’s choir, lighting ceremony, and fireworks finale. Stores will be open late and the Marines will be collecting toys for tots, so bring a new toy and enjoy!
- A little further up Hwy 45 is Weston, which is rich with old town charm during the holidays. Especially on December 6 and 7 when the annual Christmas Candlelight Homes Tour reflects the joys of Christmas past with old-fashioned trimmings and Yuletide décor. Street activities will feature carolers, holiday music and carriage rides. Father Christmas will be on hand to greet visitors. Since tickets are limited, early reservations are suggested and available now. Tickets are sold separately for each day and proceeds benefit the Weston Development Company.
- Jamesport steps you back in time. This year is the 50th Christmas of the thriving Amish settlement. Christmas is celebrated today as it was in times past. See decorated shop fronts by taking a ride in a horse drawn carriage. Join in the fun and shop in Jamesport for Christmas.
- Lexington is beautiful at Christmas time! On December 5th, the festival of lights parade and celebration is held downtown at 7:00 p.m. Floats, bands, Santa and his reindeer, and fun for everyone. Following the parade will be the lighting of the Mayor’s Christmas tree while music is provided by local groups.
