1st Annual Ride to the K - Kansas City, Missouri

The Kansas City Royals and the Employee Riders Association (ERA) from the Kansas City Harley- Davidson Operations Plant are teaming up to sponsor the First Annual “Ride to the K” Sunday, Aug 9. This year the ride benefits homeless veterans in the Kansas City area through Operation Stand Down and the Missouri Veterans Home Assistance League. This is more than just deciding to make your Sunday journey a ride to the ball park; this is an opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of those who have lived to protect us and our rights to live as we do. Imagine a huge congregation of motorcyclists gathering in a secured area of Lot N at the Truman Sports Complex, all showing support for those who have fought for our freedoms. In addition to showing appreciation for Veterans, you can enjoy live music, Hooter’s food, and many other attractions. Your favorite local vendors will be present as well.

It’s also an opportunity to see the newly redesigned K which, quite honestly, is an extreme home field makeover of magnificent proportions. This is no longer the K you grew up with! Sure, the signature swooping wings of the upper deck, the telltale crown that tops the scoreboard and the soothing waterfalls remind you of the place where the Royals won championships. But once inside you will truly be amazed at how they have brought this old, but familiar graying concrete structure and its amenities into this century. The K has truly been reborn!

Following a visit to Royals Stadium during 1974, I was extremely proud of my hometown ballpark. It had everything! Every seat seemed to point to the plate. The fountains were gorgeous, colorful and ever shifting. The huge scoreboard flashed with the latest in technology and best of all, these Royals were fierce competitors who during that time period, absolutely dominated their division. Times changed, and significant upgrades to the stadiums occurred in bits and pieces over the past 36 years.

Several hours before the start of a Saturday night game, Group Sales Rep, Brian Madden provided a VIP tour of the redesigned facility. While staff continued to prepare for the 6:10 first pitch, our excursion carried us from the exclusive and entertaining Diamond Club, to the widened concourses on the Plaza Level and then out to the open air Bud Lite Party Deck. The restoration of “the K” during the off season of 2008-2009 has justly brought it back to life! The stadium again has revived the wonder it boasted during its youth.

For your participation, you will receive a commemorative T-shirt of the First Annual Ride to the K, free parking for all motorcycles (must enter through Gate 6), a ticket to the ball game and a contribution of $5 for each ticket sold for homeless veterans. This event will be the first of its kind in Kansas City, teaming up one of Kansas City’s Major League organizations with a group of committed Kansas City riders. The opportunity to combine two great American traditions and perhaps establish a model for charitable groups nationally is something we all can take pride in being a part of.
