Gene and Marguerite Budd

Gene and Marguerite Budd Meet Gene and Marguerite Budd, an 83-year-old couple who has been going to Sturgis from 1995 to 2004. Their anniversary is even the same as the Sturgis Rally (64 years of marriage and the 64th year of the Rally). As you can see, they don’t let their age stop them from enjoying life. They are often treated like movie stars when riding through Sturgis and Deadwood, South Dakota, and people often stop them on the street and ask if they can take their picture.

Occupation: Retired construction electrician.

Hobbies, other than motorcycling? Anything, except golf, which I can get money enough to do, such as boating, fishing and traveling in our RV. Built a second trike.

Why do you ride? We love the ride and the people we meet.

How long have you been riding? Since about 30 or 40 years ago when I picked up a couple of old (kenmores) (a 175 & 250 puch) when I was on a job in Nashville, Tennessee and dragged them back home behind a little Isetta 1 cylinder, two-passenger bug.

What was your first bike? 175 Puch.

How many bikes have you owned? Can't count that high.

How many bikes do you currently own? Two. My trike, and I recently bought a 2002 Yamaha V-Star 650.

What is the year, make, and model of your current 'primary' bike? 1990 Stallion Trike.

What do you like most about your current 'primary' bike? Why? My wife can ride in comfort anywhere that I can go.

What is your dream bike? Why? Any real good trike, like a Harley conversion or a nice Hondamatic trike.

What is your most memorable riding experience? I can't say any one is better than any other, any time I can get out with my son and friends - I totally enjoy it.

What is your least memorable riding experience? Why? Can't say I have ever had a bad one. Marguerite might say it was when we were caught in a hail storm in the Black Hills.

To what motorcycle clubs or organizations do you belong? Brothers of the Third Wheel.

Which motorcycle rallies & events have you attended and which is your favorite? Ten years (1995 thru 2004) at Sturgis, I love riding those hills.

Do you prefer riding in a group or by yourself? Group - comradeships.

Who are some of your closest riding buddies? My son, Rick Budd, Gary Smith, Chris, Rosanne, Shannon Howerton and his Dad, Rick Howerton.

Just for fun, which of your riding buddies is the best rider? My son, Rick Budd is best at everything.

Just for fun, which of your riding buddies is the worst rider? Me (not true - ask his son and Gary).

Any additional information you’d like to share? We celebrate our anniversary year the same as the anniversary year of the Sturgis Rally. We were married on July 8th but we wait until August 8th (somewhere around that day) to celebrate with our son (he and Rosanne were married in Deadwood during the Sturgis Rally on August 10th), so both of our wedding anniversaries are together; 64 years of marriage for us and four years of marriage for my son.
